hit the first spot at 630 thanks for your help Josh .

got a nice goldie and some perch then went to a new spot little pond next to an office building maybe 50 by 70 feet I was using a store bought trap and holy mother load there were so many that at least 20 were dead I guess there were between 60 -80 goldies .
Has anyone had this happen I only had the trap in from 530 am yesterday to 8 am today . All the dead ones will be frozen and used later next time I will use one of my bigger traps to avoid that problem what a problem to have to much bait ;D Next I hit my spots close to home my goldie spot had 8 big suckers and the dace spot nada .

Anytime Ron.  I will keep an eye on the area too and see if anymore come in.  Landed a nice trailer today.  gonna hit Home depot and start building the new shanty!

Well' i couldn't stand reading all these good reports anymore so i jumped on the bandwagon .
I found a waterfall, semi-remote area, except for the supermarket beside it :o loaded the  regular trap with bread
and a "modified" trap the same way, and launched them in!! Hopefully the kids won't find them with this rain today.  I also tinted the rope black with some paint so you don't see it in this mud hole. I hope i didn't over think myself and have the paint come off on my hands when i pull the traps in. :-[Time will tell. KK

Three day soak in a small pond with two traps and 27 bull head and exactly one shiner  ???  I stand there and watch as dozens of shiners swim by each trap and never go in Aaaarggggh.

i had the same result on an extended soak. my best success was to get trap in water a little bit before dusk and then pull it a few hours later. this is when i got the most shiners. i would pull the trap again a few hours later with some more shiners but not as many as that first pull.  good luck i hope you start hitting them good

We went scouting yesterday for more spots. With my wife calling me every half hour, it gets pretty annoying. So I went and cut up another deer. This one is sausage and burger. Stink Finger is going out to check our traps now. Gonna move a few to some new spots. Try to get them closer together so It doesn't take 3 hours to check them.

Good to see everyones posts!  Much like many of you, I have been bitten by the "bait bug".  I live on Flint pond and tried dropping a trap behind my house.  One day soak provided me with a tiny sunfish and a 2" bass!  Looks like I will also be doing some scouting this week.  Looking forward to seeing alot of you out on the ice this year!  Until then, think COLD thoughts!

try putting a can of cat food in your bait trap. before you put the cat food in, don"t open the cat food can. poke holes in the top of the can then in your trap it goes and then set your trap in its spot. you poke holes in the can so that the food itself doesn"t get eaten by the bait. by poking holes in it, it allows the scent to leave and the actual cat food will stay for a while.this is an awsome method i found to be very productive.

ok, after 2 weeks of trying to trap at a place i know there are shiners with no sucess, other than one crayfish, i've finally moved my traps. Mind you i did move my traps around this one pond i was trying to trap in.  Now i'm trapping in a different area i just found today.  I was wondering  how long do you give a place before you move on?

I would give it a week  and if you move your traps around the same pond put a chum bag where you had your traps some times it takes a while for them to find the bait I've never had luck in big ponds one acre and less like farm pond size .

I've been trying to0 trap in beaver ponds, all about 1-2 acres.  Hopefully my new spot pays off...1 acre pond with a stream flowing in and out.

I catch tons of shiners in a small pond made by a dam in a small creek (it's only about 3 or 4 feet deep. but I can't find any Suckers! WHERE ARE THE SUCKERS AND HOW DO I CATCH THEM??? Thanks  ;D

Finally, a little success.  Had eight in my trap this evening.  I don't think they are goldies though.  They have a slight gold tint to them but not the flashy gold like the one that Ron gave me, more of a bluish tint.  My fishing bud says they are just regular pond shiners.  Some of them were in the 4 inch range

Red fin shiners, they are their own species. Some often have black dots on the fins.

Not an ichthyologist, but I don't think they are.  Googled Red Fin and they don't really look the same.  These guys have coloration on ventral fins only.  The bigger ones also seem rounder verse the relatively thin elongated bodies on the ones I saw on my google search.

My Audubon fish guide is at my friends so I am still not sure what they are.  There are many kinds of shiner type fish.

Any other suggestions guys ?
