With all the members how come so few pictures? Come on guys it's not that hard to post'em. In fact there are many instructions on how to post them. But PLEASE do not post a pic like the one dated 12-24 with 14 NORTHERN PIKE! What on gods green earth are you keeping 14 pike for? Hopefully the water you fished those out of are over loaded with them. Some don't even look legal size.

I agree with Muskie Matt about keeping all those pike. I practice catch and release all the time. Seeing all those game fish dead is a shame to me.

Great pics Esox. I'm surprised that you guys get ice thick enough to drive on. How much do you get in a normal winter? We usually get just under 4' up here
. What the heck is a bowfin?
Ditto on the catch and release. I've never killed a pike in my life. That's what walleyes are for
. The way I see it is they can never get to be a 25 if you kill them when they're a 20.

Acsacmboy,
Arkansas shiner (pike bait) under a tip-up. Yeah it was nice. I got a 23.5" the year before, but I did not have a camera with me....lesson learned.
Tip-up,
We had about 36" last year. We had a really warn winter 2 years ago (record warm) and we only got 24". A bowfin is a prehistoric fish. VERY agressive strikes and incredible fighters. They can actually breath out of water.

just to tell everyone try not to hold a pike vertical. it messes with thier insides and stuff like that. try to hold them horizontal. i learned this at the trip i went to. i got a 44, 41 and 2 40's. catch walleye in 3 feet of water in the middle of the day
. ill include th link if anyone is interested. this is a place worth looking into. fairly cheap too. fly in trip. 70 miles south of James bay.

look at this place. worth lookin at

Interesting......The Fisheries biologist that I fish with told me it was not an issue.....nor was the use of my lip gripper. I lip the fish and keep it in the hole until I'm ready for a quick photo and measurement. Generally the amount of time a fish is being held vertically for a photo is minimal. The most important issue is getting the fish back into the water as quickly as possible. JMO.
Then again I've had 2 "experts" tell me opposite things before. I guess one never knows.

Bigger game fish like large pike and musky NEED to be held horizontally if the angler wants to be assured that the fish will live more than a few days after the successfull release. That is the current word being spread by the musky associations here in Wisconsin...

Fine!..
Happy now?
Do you have any idea how long it took me to find that fish again so I could hold it horizontally?
Seriously.....I've heard that a lot, but I've yet to have anybody be able to show me any data. It very well could be true, but like I said I've never seen any data. What is worse....the force of gravity pushing down on the "innards" of the fish when held vertivally? Or the pressure caused by our hands on the "innards" when holding the fish horizontally? Just food for thought. One thing for sure....minus not catching the fish at all, the best thing for the fish is to never have it leave the water.
Good luck out there today...and Happy New Year.
