I chuckled where it stated they were considered a delicacy (just that word) in Illinois and where it saida local university will soon start selling bluegill burgers

What I find silly is they think they can eliminate them by fishing them hard? I think we all know better. They may reduce their numbers but considering one bluegill can produce 20,000 eggs and can breed up to three times a year their fishing them out is only wishful thinking. Only way to eliminate them is a total fish kill. Been there done that in ponds when I wanted to start completely over when they were stunted.

I hear largemouth bass are considered a nusiance over there too. Seems they like to eat those expensive Koi.  ;D

and one firm is experimenting with a version of funazushi - a local delicacy of salted crucian carp and rice that is left to ferment for three years.

Maybe we have a new recipe for bluegill here!!! ;D

reminds me of when i lived in florida while in the Navy. Droves of oriental folks would show up on the piers with cast nets and sabiki rigs, but no other rods. Finally figured out it was the oily bait fish that they wanted to eat and they weren't catching them for bait. Must be an aquired taste. :cookoo:

Obviously they are suffering from some form of widespread mental illness if they prefer 3 year old carp over a fresh gill fry!!!!   :o   Maybe we should test their drinking water?   ;D

Blue gill are a problem there because you have to cook it to eat it. If it's not raw they won't eat it. Sure beats the price of raw tuna.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

You guys do realize the Japanese value their koi so highly some specially colored specimens have sold for a million dollars? I know a guy that gets broodstock there for his high value koi farm in Oklahoma. He says some of them cost five grand. If you don't believe me look it up.

What gets me is they are complaining about bluegills, but what about all of the carp that are infesting our waters?  I was always told that they were  a japanese fish that was released into our waters because they fought so hard.  They eat game fish eggs, endangering our native species.

And they taste like CRAP!!!!

I love a flag!!!!

If you're talking about common carp they didn't specifically come from Japan but Europe first, although they were originally from Asia. It's not proven they eat game fish eggs although they do roil the bottom up searching for aquatic insects and  aquatic vegetation. They were introduced by our Game fish commison in the 1880's but just didn't catch on. Very popular in other parts of the world though. Have you ever caught one? They do fight hard and if pressured get difficult to catch. Although I agree with you. Not my cup of tea.

Well said, Taxidermist1.  While I must agree that they are not the best eating fish that I've ever had, they do fight pretty good, and what other fish can you regularly find in the 10 pound class.  All in all, a pretty good game fish.

I can understand their limited success trying to use them as chicken feed. Last I knew most of the chickens were never able to master the art of filleting the bluegills!

I am not sure they fillet any of the fish they eat. seems like they eat every part of every animal, fish, etc. at least they are not being wastefull.
