Ever catch a rainbow this fat?
« on: Dec 08, 2006, 08:42 PM »
I mounted this for another taxidermist. Apparently hatchery broodstock past its prime that was planted into a local river. Yes, the head was that small! She was only about 25 inches but over 13 lbs.! Bottom pic is a close up of scale detail on another fat mounted one, but not quite as big.

I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

To mount a fish like that, what exactly is "real fish" and what is not? I've never understood how it works.

you can mount a fish using its skin, or you can get a premade model of a fish and just paint that to make it look realistic

Gotcha, I guess you glue the skin on a foam body or something? That's a great looking fish and mount.

That is a really nice mount for a trout, looks almost as fat as the 19lb Arctic Char I caught earlier this year and it was 32 inches long. Obviously a very well fed trout at the hatchery.

I caught one that looked like that (a 13 pounder also) off the surf near Ludington, MI. quite a few years ago. It was my first lake run rainbow and it was on the first attempt at surf fishing. We hammered them that day and we ate all of them!
It was too easy that day and I thought I'd hold out for a "big one" to have mounted. Never caught another one close to that!!!
Live and learn I guess ...

Im more excited about the mount than the fish itself :o

For that length of rainbow trout I have never seen one quite that chunky, a very healthy fish indeed. :)
Great job on the mount taxidermist1. 8)

In the Garrison Dam Tailrace (Central ND) the browns, rainbows and salmon get so fat on smelt it is almost scary.  Looking at this picture of the state record brown caught in 2005, you can see why many anglers throw original raps in silver colors throughout the year.  So, though I've never caught a fatty like that, they do exist, they're usually old, and they aren't sipping size 20 midges for their choice forage!

We had a lake here in Indiana that had lots of smelt until our DNR planted lake trout. The lake trout wiped them out along with the cisco. The brown trout a club I belong plants will never get really huge on a regular basis again.  :( And the DNR won't let us replant smelt to get them going now that the lake trout have died out.  >:(

He's as fat as he was originally though. I use a template to carve the body with all the original measurements.

Do you have any pictures of that char?  We have only three or four lakes in Maine that hold Char and they only range in size from 6" to a rare 20" (most landed fish are: 6").  Here they are a real prize given their low numbers.  My wife and I feel fortunate to have landed a nice 8" Blueback while casting a Woods Special this past August.

You do realize the arctic char he has up there get much larger than your small landlocked char on a regular basis right?
