It's cold enough but...
« on: Dec 03, 2006, 10:06 AM »
It's too windy to make ice!  >:(

My ponds formed skim ice last night but once the wind picks up during the day it get's obliterated.

11:05 A.M. right now and it's 19 F.

That means the bigger lakes aren't much better.  :( :( :(

I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

no ice on my pond yet.  This wind is a bummer!  I did see several ponds that were frozen on my way in to work this morning.

Good Luck. My big pond skimmed over half way but the wind is supposed to really kick up today which means it will bust it back up.  :(

I see we're supposed to go back to a Pacific air mass by the end of this week.  >:(

I say we won't really be on the ice until just after Christmas if things are normal. If it's another goofed up winter it's hard telling.  :'( :'( :'(

its cold here in west central in styed at 15 degrees all night long and the weather is going to stay cold for a couple of more days. There was no wind last night and so far none today, maybe just maybe a couple of inches.
I need to go to the bathroom, but it might flip up if I go.

Patience people.  It has only been cold for a few days.  Last year it took about 10 days once it got cold to get on the ice.  I am sure by the weekend there should be a few places ready.  The pond/lake outside had ice yesterday morning and held up.  However, I have no desire to ice fish that, I know whats in there, not that exciting.  In the picture you are only seeing about 1/6 of it.  The little open water you do see is from one of the fountains in it, no matter how cold it gets or how thick the ice is, that area is always open.

Real fisherman don't yield to the weather.

The pond in front of West Noble High School is frozen over, but yet my pond that is the same size or a little smaller just a quarter of a mile down the road is not. Why? Because there is a woods and middle school buldings that block the wind primarly north and south of the school pond. But my south side has about a 1000 acre farm field that is wide open. Amazing what a difference a little wind or lack of wind can do.

I still think it's early yet anway. We need to wait two or three more weeks.

My entire pond locked up last night!  I was surprised!  The wind must have died down late in the night.  Have about 1 inch at the edges.

My biggest pond locked up too last night! If we can just get enough thickness before it gets milder this weekend to make it through until the next cold snap I think we'll be in business! I think they're saying low 40's to upper 30's by this weekend into next week with the possiblity of showers.  ::)

Some snow on the ground could keep daily highs down or just enough snow on the ice to reflect sunlight but let the ice freeze wouuld be good.  :-\  Another positive would be snow on the ice that gets melted and then refreezes to add thickness to the ice. Not as good as clear ice but still strong.

Yeah but the snow could be a bad thing if there is too much this early. It could insulate the ice and keep it from freezing more significantly. On the other hand if the ice is relatively thin, heavy snow could sink and crack open the existing ice layer, and create a slush ice, which will eventually freeze up if it gets cold enough. This could actually make a thicker more opaque ice.

I guess we will see.

I've got a buddy that went out to Wolf Lake in Hammond. He said he walked out about 40' in some locked water where it's only 3 ft deep. He said he heard some cracking and went back to land. Let's hope those 40's we're hearing about don't come w/ any wind  :(

Mine's closed up except where the geothermal discharges and has about an inch of snow on it. It is cold though. Snow that is not too thick could keep it from melting next week. And if the temps are low enough I've seen ice made under snow if it's not too thick. Also snow cover on the ground can keep daytime highs down by relecting sunlight back. I'm hoping anyway!
