That's the way to do it! No need to stress the fish by hanging them on a scale.

I have been out there quite a bit this year-I only live a half hour away. Fishing has been pretty steady. Had my dad and a friend come up in febuary when it was cold and the fishing was red hot-2 and a half days-55 flags, 26 fish-lots of fish in the 10-17 lb range-we got a 32.1, 24, and 21 on the last day. I was out last week and we got a 27 lber and 5 other fish-that is pretty much average for a day on the flats
flag-up!!!

Welcome to Ice Shanty. It's always nice to reliable info coming in. Are you drivin on the ice? Coming up on the 16th, 17th. Hoping to drive on, but a little concerned. Does a quad make for a long trip on the ice? Can you quad on the ice? Thanks.

I will be honest with ya
1) I think guys are off and on driving out-we are getting warm weather in the next few days and that will probably seal the deal with driving-there is about 6 to 8 inches of frozen slush on top of the ice, then lots of snow on top of it-as soon as it warms up a little, the slush will melt and you will not be able to drive anywhere-I learnt my lesson last year-we snapped driveshafts in 2 different trucks and barely made it off the lake.
2)quads are useless once march rolls around-I have not seen a quad on the lake this year on the flats except in january-there will be so much water on the ice and we have so much snow that you will make it no where.
The only reliable way to get onto the lake is with a sled-either borrow or rent one otherwise, you might just be standing on the shore since it is about a mile and a half to get out to where there is more than 6 inches of water under the ice
And bring an extension-I had to use mine last week when I was out
hope this helps
I am going out friday-I will post how it was and if guys are still driving out.
later

went out today-someone plowed a road so guys are still driving out-I cannot see it lasting too long though
Fishing was not bad-got a 24, snapped 45 lb test dacron on a big one that got into the lumber on me, caught some 10's, 12's, pretty average day

going today and tomorrow-will let you know
I use herrings, sardines, mackerals and ciscoes
Ciscoes probably work the best-I have a bunch of guys coming up next weekend-you cannot find the big ciscoes anymore but I saved 20 huge ones for next weekend
I will let you know how the bite goes

that sounds pretty good. how far off the plowed road roughly are you guys fishing?? trying to get a group together for next weekend as fishing seems to be slow around here, have a couple spots in the GPS from last winter but don't know if they'll produce this year.

I don't know if that road will be that great anymore-it snowed here last night, supposed to snow tonight and it is really windy so that road might get blown in. It goes way out there-almost to the petigan channel-anywhere off that road has been pretty good

If I hear something, I will let you know-I would suspect that the road may be blown in since we had some bad weather the last couple of days but who knows-it is supposed to nice here after today so I have no idea what that road will turn into-it may get to slushy also-there is alot of frozen slush on the lake right now and once it warms up, look out!!!

It's blown in from Sunday's wind. Lots of huts went off Sunday. Still some out there. Fishing was good.

As of Monday morning the ice road was un-drivable. Not sure if it'll be plowed again. Sunday's wind blew it over. Huge drifts, bottom of the door high. I would advise a sled at this point. However, it may get plowed again. I have no idea.
