Oh baby- for sure will hit the flats for over 30's- pounds that is.  Plan to get a couple of 3 day trips in, can't wait- and for world record eyes on the flats- a guy would be surprised as to what will roam there.  If I didn't see it for myself- I wouldn't of believed it- since we all know the number of monster pike that roam there nothing should really be in there? Right?  I have seen absolute monster PERCH - monster- pulled out from the flats, along with some big eyes.  Last march I was fishing a ways from a fellow, taht when snowmobiled by, noticed he had only one tip up set up, and 20 yards away, was jigging what appeared to be an ultra light rod. Later on that day, looking with my Binos, I saw him pull up a perch that HAD to be over two pounds.  Later that day, I struck up a conversation with him, and he says that he cathes both monster perch and monster eyes, not very many, but everyone is worth the wait.  Again, if i didn't see, I wouldn't beleive it.

perch are pretty common on the flats usually see more perch on the aqua view than pike, just most guys are hanging 8 inch baits aren't going to know they are around, not too many walleye around that i've seen.

Making my first trip to the flats (hardwater) this year. Looking for Big pike. Any one area that ice fishers congregate? Any tips on presentation, depth, location? I have a map of the flats. Thanks.

I find tullibees work great can get em at DBN in Carrot River, once youre are out there you will see at least one big group of shacks probably two or three groups by jan 1. location is tough without GPS coordinates you are just guessing. a lot of water out there is 6-8 feet some even shallower, if you can find 10 feet or maybe even 12 you have found some kind of channel creek bed or ditch or something. one main spot lots of guys fish is the ditch. 3 years ago we found a sweet hump (aren't they all) 3 fish over 19 lbs in 3.5 hours, never to find it again as i didn't own gps at the time. needless to say i own one now.

What time of the season are guys drivin on the flats? Do most enter at the boat launch near Campbell Dam? Is the road past Tobin Lake Resort Villiage up to the Walls Flats plowed regularly? Is this a winter option? How far south do guys fish in Petaigan Bay? Does the old river channel to the North produce? Should be deeper. Thanks.

most guys drive on from an old road that runs into the lake turn at the blooms(sp??) greenhouse sign and stay on this road until it turns and heads east then it runs right into the lake. Most of the pike fishing is done right in petaigan bay, i know from where we drive on guys aren't on or near the old riverbed. i don't think the access at the damn is used much as an access to the flats as this would be a long way around, and quite a long distance from where most guys fish.

Heads east? So that is the road running North on the land between the river and Bay? Does it get plowed? Sounds like you head southwards in the bay to fish? Would you recommend the west or east shore? Any problems with dead heads through the ice? Thanks again.

yeah its a fairly main grid, there's a farm probably only a mile or so from the lake and usually someone plows onto the lake with a tractor, just turn north off the highway at the greenhouse sign and follow the road till it runs into the lake its pretty hard to miss, when you fish the bay you are more out in the middle not really close to either shore we are usually 3 miles or so off the west shore of the bay. you could be a mile out and only 3 feet of water. yeah watch out for dead heads but slush is the real enemy out there with the early snow this year it might be a crappy year as far as diving on the ice.

Not sure if I will give Tobin Lake another go this year.I went out in early Feb and fished for two days with only one fish , mind you it was a dandy 12lbs. I think I must of hit a bad time, the locals said the bite had been off for a week or more.

I think you can also find whole ciscos{tullibee} in Nipawin's largest grocery store, I believe the owner of Thunder Rapids lodge on the west end of Tobin near the power station also sell them.

Like Meadowpikeman said slush can be a real pain on Tobin along with deep snow. It would be a good idea to bring along a snowmachine just in-case the vehicle isn't enough. ::)

Has anyone ever caught, or have heard of burbot being caught in Petaigan Bay? ???

When I went I stayed at the Tobin Lake Motel, It's right along the main drive in Nipawin.
It has nice rooms at a fair price and a compelementry continental breakfast.
