Best Ice Cleats? Which do you have?
« on: Jan 24, 2021, 08:13 AM »
I have these that slip over my Sorel  boot.....

IMO Marginally  good as  not many carbide pins.

Which do you own and find most effective on glaze ice?

Khatoola micro spikes.  Best traction system I've ever owned.

Stabilicers. It's like a sandal that fits over your boots. I use Mickeys and they fit over them very well.

# 1 Kahtoola's...There are some Amazon knock offs at some inexpensive process that members have said worked well ..I have a pair of Eagle Claw with Kahtoola type spikes as a back up ..but have not needed to do so. BPS/Cabelas I believe have them for $13.

I use Yaktrax chains. I hand haul everything, and never have traction issues on glare ice pulling my gear with the Yaks.

I have Stabilicers (expensive ones) and what are now called the K&E Ice Chisel Boot Cleats. I use the K&E all the time now because they are easier to put on and take off.

Same here, on my 3rd or 4th season with them. They outlasted the pair of boots I first had them on. Nice that you don't have to worry about taking them off to drive or walk on concrete

Kathoola micro spikes. Best purchase I ever made for walking on ice. The cheap amazon knockoffs work good as Well. The difference that I see between the 2 are the knockoff ones dont have the reinforced rubber inserts like the kathoolas.

I just leave them on my boots all the time, since the only thing I use my winter boots for are ice fishing. I'm on season 3 or 4 with the set I have, too. I think the hardest thing on them for lifespan is stretching them on and off the boots, so I'm hoping to get a few more seasons out of mine by not taking them off.

Ive used a 20 dollar set off amazon for 2 seasons now. I have an extra set on the ice with me in case one breaks or someone else needs a set.

As others have said. Its the stretch of the rubber that gets a beating. Ive had one break where the metal loops to the rubber

I suggest you use what works best for you. Atleast use something.
Two years ago I said I will put them on when I get to my spot. That was too late. Fell and broke my elbow. Cleats are much cheaper.

I leave these on my Muck boots

Thanks for this!  I just ordered a new set.  I have a pair similar to the micro spikes and they have good traction but I can't stand how loud they are on glare ice.  If you are fishing shallow for pike or even trout I'd imagine they would severely impact the catching.  I wear them bc they are better than nothing but I had forgot about this style.

I love my Stabilicers. Easy off and on and no rubber parts to break. They grip on the ice better than anything I have tried I guess. They are about as durable also as a guy could ask for. Ice fishing is tough on equipment and I guess I’ve just really had good luck with these even after many years of use.

Been using the YakTrax XTR for the past few years. they work great but now I have the Cabela's Trans Alaskan Pac Boot. The XTR still work good but the rubber is stretching o much that they are cracking. Now, I' looking at the YakTrax Summit that have the BOA cable fastening system. Just not sure they will fit my boots.

kahtoola microspikes. Will never own anything different. They are absolutely amazing, they have outshined everything I have seen when there is that 1/2" of powder snow on the ice.. the rest clog and slide everywhere, I run across the ice to get tipups. I have never once lost footing or slipped with them on, not in the 5 years I've used them. I walk on concrete (isnt comfortable) and they dont seem to dull. The only negative I can think to give would be that they are very loud, you arent sneaking up on anyone.

DanMan no not those. They look almost like a hard rubber sandal with Velcro straps. They have replaceable screws in the bottom. The screw heads are kinda hollowed out and they grab great. A lot of postal workers, railroad workers use them. If you google ice stabilicers they can be found online.

I had a few pairs of those(Due North).Good on ice with no snow, but they do break easily when putting them on when cold.Tried the coil spring ones, but they clog with slush/snow.Took a spill and returned them.

Microspikes for me.Just make sure they fit snug with no slack in them.
