underwater contour maps
« on: Dec 06, 2016, 05:36 PM »
I am looking at the cheapest way to get good quality contour maps.  Mainly looking for where to find printed maps of specific lakes, but also somewhat interested in electronic contour maps for a garmin or something like that.  Any help guys?

if you fill out your location in your profile that could help someone lead you in the right direction. I get mine right off of the game and parks website. might start by checking there.

Get the app for your smart phone called Navionics Boating.  It has all the bigger lakes included, at least for my state.  I held my phone last year as I walked across a lake and found the deepest hole in the lake.  Gives you instant depth. You can find dropoffs, etc.   Costs $9.99 per year.

I also use my Humminbird 688DI (I bought for my boat) it has gps capability.  I mark my favorite spots and can add waypoints of rock piles, structure and brushpiles supplied by the state DNR.  The cool thing about the HB is they make an ice transducer for it and the software has an ice flasher mode.   But I still use the chart screen.  I purchased Lakemaster maps for my state, gives topo and other details.
You can't get the fruit if you don't go out on the limb.

Navionics is about fifteen or twenty years out of sync when it comes to lake mapping around here. What's worse, is they won't update free government data. If they won't supply public domain info, how can you pay for a premium product?

I agree, Navionics is super simple to use, super easy and available right on your phone.  In addition you can use the DNR Lake Finder http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/index.html.  Search for your lake and click on lake depth on the left side.

If you have issues with Navionics mapping follow this link and let them know what they are missing. http://navionics.force.com/Mobile?cancel=http%3A%2F%2Fnavionics.force.com%2Fkb

Another option is do SonarCharts live and create lake maps before the lake freezes over using a Vexilar Sonar Phone

If the Garmin supports Quick Draw then you have your homework to do the map yourself.  It is highly detailed and free.

Right on. Thanks for all the info.  Yeah there is not a lot mapped here in wyoming.  Mainly looking for Alcova reservoir and Pathfinder reservoir.  These are two popular lakes that I'm having a hard time finding good mapping.  I'll look into some of these options and get back with you all.

With my navionics app it was extremely close if you sync it with sonarchart on the app. I believe it syncs with people's boat sonar to update it. Not sure on that though.

I just checked  my Navionics app and Alcova is pretty detailed but Pathfinder has no data at all. Weird. Check out Alcova on the Navionic web app here: http://webapp.navionics.com/#boating/search@11&key=_~pbGh%60qjS

I believe Garmin has both lakes with 1 foot contours according to their Garmin maps.

Kirt? I tried this before, and even supplied links to your company. That was shortly after I first bought your app. Nothing has changed

Let's try this one more time. Here is the front door to the entire Nebraska data set for Navionics to use -- hunting, boating, fishing, hiking, biking. http://data.outdoornebraska.gov/

Here are the links to the specific data sets for lake contours, pool shore lines and locations. http://data.outdoornebraska.gov/datasets?q=lake+mapping&sort_by=name&sort_order=asc

Can you pass this on to the programmers yourself?

Thanks

Info is sent and received they are reviewing the data for adding it to the system. Keep an eye on the areas and do update periodically. It might take them a little time to process but it is under review.

If I get an update on my end I will post here

Has anyone had success with Fishidy? Maybe not for contour maps, but at least to mark your spots with decent accuracy?

I personally use Aqua maps, it's a very cheap app and covers several lakes in my area that navionics does not. The app is per state, then you d/l maps for specific regions of the state.

Another vote for Navionics.

Best money I ever spent on either my boat or fishing gear. It had saved my butt too when a storm blew in on a bigger lake and we lost our sense of direction to where the access was.

I used free DNR maps before that but navionics is much more detailed, down to 1 ft increments (DNR was every 5). I found out there were humps and holes where I thought there were flats before.

Edit: Forgot to mention, my dad was so impressed with Navionics that he downloaded a mapping app but went with a cheaper one. He tried to convince me I overpaid but when I showed him what Navionics could do he bought it on the spot.

If there are lakes in your area that are not on the Navionics app let me know I will pass this along just like above.

And the basic app is free but the 10.00 gets you a whole lot more!

Thank you everyone for your help and info.  Kirt I also fish pathfinder reservoir a lot and it is right up stream from alcova about 10 miles.  I am not seeing any contours for that lake.  Do you think you could have that updated.  I went fishing a few times this week using the app.  I'm getting more familiar with it and it has been very helpful. Thanks again.

I'm not sure how boat accessible many of your waters are that aren't mapped but one great option is using Auto Chart Love from humminbird. I scout most of my lakes and waters before ice and make my own maps with my Helix 10s then download them to my humminbird pc account and then dowlload onto a SD card and upload to my smaller helix 7 for ice purposes. I also use Navionics apps and maps plus lake master chips since each one can he different and depending on who mapped the lake and which version it is each can have its own set of hot spots that are or aren't marked. Gogle maps satellite view is also a key scouting tool for finding structure in clearer lakes.
I tried sky diving once.....went to Google Earth and zoomed in really fast

Nice features regarding marking spots and sharing data... but the contour maps are not very good at all (atleast for my lakes)

I also use Aqua maps. I've been very pleased with it. It has a lot of maps in Maine that Navionics and other Apps do not.
