The state record for a brown will be tough to beat. I suppose its possible though. Maybe thats why people arent catching many trout outta there... There is one big one in there eating them all!

It wasn't drained last time, they brought the level down to repair the dam.
The fishing was great when the level was down.
It also kept all the yahoos off it with their ski boats.
I don't do Facebook so I can't share that info, I wouldn't even know where to start.
There's big Browns caught out of there every year you just don't hear about it.

I thought it had been drained a few times ? Did all fish survive? If they did it is possible since there is a good smelt population. A picture and entry to the state would be what we would have to see.

It was mostly drained both in the 1980s and in the early 00s. There was still water in it but it was very low. There were fish still living in what was there and it has been stocked since.

The fish have had some years (almost 10?) to begin their comeback.
May the fish be with you.

I lived in Waterbury when they drained it last time, the broad lake was 40-50' deep still.

Ice might actually be in better shape than the roads out there right now. They turn to puddin' when they melt.
May the fish be with you.

The record was obviously a rumor, but does anyone have pictures of the big fish coming out of there?

Where did you go on from? And how bad are the edges how did you get on? Trying to give it one more shot maybe on Saturday. Thanks

Went on at blush hill. One guy was already out fishing he threw me a rope from safe ice. I hitched my popup shanty to it. I walked on land to a rocky point and walked on. Then walked back on the ice and pulled my shanty on the safe ice. It was a real crap show but I don't get much time to fish so I made the best of it. Ice was about 15" once you got about 30' from shore.

Im confused by the end of ice talk here (not doubting just curious).  How much was left?  Looks like there is one more blast of cold for the next 4 days at least

Honestly we were pushing our luck there with ice, the edges are junk.

It doesn't really matter how much is there right now, the extended forecast shows after the weekend 11-12 days of highs in the 40's and 50's, and lows not dipping below 32 degrees.  That would kill even 2' of ice.

Where do you guys setup for browns?  Shallow water or deep?  Just under the ice or on bottom?  I've never caught one through the ice and made an attempt at Island Pond last weekend with no luck, but I have no idea what I'm doing!

Bottom
Island pond is hard it's too noisy and busy there.
Best bet for IP is early mornings be set up an hour before light

I agree here...a single 4wheeler driving by seems to kill my flags for an hour.
