2014 Species
« on: Nov 01, 2013, 06:02 PM »
I got rid of perch this year and added Bluegill/Sunfish and Rainbow Trout.

It's tough to make everyone happy and still keep the # of species down, but I'm trying.

Yup, there's gills here. Been fishin' here fer 39 of my 75 years and have actually caught one beautiful gill, very colorful and was all of two and five eights inches long. I gently released it and later discovered it was fully grown. It came from a lake that is over twelve hundred feet deep and came from a bay only three feet deep. The perch here are a different story      :o      ;)2

Tim,
Thanks for handling the Tourney again.
       Wishing you success.

I agree that bluegills needed to be there and I understand the popularity of rainbow trout but to sacrifice a popular species like perch seems a bit harsh. I know everyone wants to add "just one more" species, but perch are a popular quarry. You should reconsider.
That having been said, THANKS for running the Tournament! And good luck to all the participants!

Wouldn't it be easier on the graciousness of Tiny Tim volunteering to run this Tourney by having fewer species involved, like maybe carp and snakehead ? And throw in freshwater sheephead as a third ?      :woot:   OK, sorry, that should be reserved for April first.

Thank you Tim, for doing this.         ;)2

Is 16" for a Crappie correct? Last years largest entry was 15-1/2" if I'm correct?

For trophy, yes. Some of the sizes changed according to how many we had last yr. :)

You and me both  ;D ;D

If only you guys had 1/2 the Rainbow trout we do here in Alaska!
Thanks for adding rainbow trout as now I actually have a species I can fish for that we have locally and in trophy sizes.
We don't have any perch in state anywhere so eliminating that one doesn't bother me.

It is sad for me perch & walleyes make up for 95 percent of my hard water catches. But I guess I will have to find other species this season, trout is a possibility this year.

I have an idea for next season already, maybe run a vote with all the species and the top 10 be the tourney fish? Everyone on the site can vote for there top choice too be in the tourney, seems that would be fair, I would volunteer too make the thread...

Next year is a long way away, but I will take your suggestion into consideration.

I'm actually thinking about going to 6 or 7 species for adults and kids, I think the kiddo's should have equal opportunity to win. :)

2cents: In my neck of the woods perch and lil kokanee salmon are a big percent of what we catch. The perch category would definitely be missed.  ???

Thanks for setting this up regardless...
They catch the fish and then let it go. They don't want to eat the fish, they just want to make it late for something.

In my area perch are the number one pan fish then you have the walleye and Northern Pike.  Will have to try to fine some bluegill.  Sorry to see the perch gone from the 2014 tourney.

I think it's great to shake it up every once in awhile. Remove a popular species and add one for us guys who don't have that species available to us.
It also encourages people to step outside their comfort zone and try for a species they seldom fish for.
