Does a smitty count when you punch the 4x4 button on the dash and just drive out on the lake anywhere you like?

I wouldn't reccommend that in NY!!

Thanks all for the great ideas! I really like the sled built using the roof rack system. Great use of existing equipment.

I had an unused aluminum folding ramp hanging around and couldn't resist, especially since I really needed to build a sled for under my flip over. Picked up a 4 foot chunk of 2" x 6" rectangular aluminum tube at my local Metal Supermarket. (love that place) and a $5 pair of skis at my local Salvation Army Store.

Tested it this morning and what a difference getting the shelter up on the skis makes!

Shelter secured using the straps we use to secure the kayaks on the truck rack.

Looking for replacement hinges that I can pull the pins on to break it in half for transport.

For those who have actually used dovetailed cross pieces, what's you opinions versus bolts?

Seems ok so far. For me, it was more difficult to cut them than I expected. And when I lift up the sled (for whatever reason), the joints often come loose. This may happen to the bolt models as well. Might be nice to have locking joints! I like the idea of no hardware, but I don't think it's much of an improvement. Looks pretty cool though, and people notice (fwiw).

good job all!

i have mine made up quick and no fuss no muss and was out fishing with a dog sled racer and he told me to move the pull ropes up and back to the risers closet to the front of the skis. said it would pull better. i first thought how could it, but then in deep snow i did notice it was back heavy with the ropes on the tip of the skis. i figured nothing to loose so i bought some clips and tied the rope to them and clipped them onto the front riser eye bolts and it is no longer back heavy and rides flat front to back now
it was sorta plowing the snow

he said on dog sleds the pull rope goes all of the way to back of the sled
so check yours and move it back off of the ski. i know the idea of the rope on the tip of the ski is to get the ski to lift, but it does anyway

keep it up!

up dated my smitty to a drop down smitty today. Here is the prototype. Needs a little tweaking.

This is the greatest idea I've seen for a flip over. I'm going to have to give that one a try.

what do you think?

$ 899.99 Cdn on p. 221 in Cabela's Canadian Christmas catalog. Wonder if Smitty and/or the other designers/builders on this site will get any royalties, or even a thank you. Probably just a lawsuit for patent infringement if we continue to build our own, as they advertise it as the "first towable-utility hauler designed for rough-winter terrain." Truth-in advertising? LOL.

If they try to pull a patent, I think we have documentation history to cover this......
