What is it?
« on: Jan 22, 2013, 12:05 PM »
Anyone ever catch a fish you couldn't identify?
Back in the late 60's we were ice fishing next to a group at the OXBOW.
They hauled out a fish with FANGS. Looked like a wahoo.
About 3-1/2 to 4 ft long, skinny with a long, creepy looking dorsal fin.

Fish and Game said it looked like a prehistoric fish but later identified it
as a LANCETFISH. Not believed to be anadromous but probably lifted
over the fish lift at Holyoke dam in the spring.

i saw that headline but never clicked on it.  as an aquarist i believe that fish was put in there by someone who didn't or couldn't have it as a pet anymore.  hard to tell how big that one is.  12"?  if so it's about max size.  they are tropical fish so they can't handle the cold well.  you actually see tons of them in lake wilson on oahu(hawaii).  people dump them in the lakes out there too.  except it's the ideal conditions for them to breed and survive.  oddly on lake wilson i'll see them come right up to the top as if they were taking a gulp of air and then go back down.  ive never see this behavior in the aquarium trade.

this one was probably just put in the past year.  i'm surprised it was able to survive for so long.
