Went for a swim
« on: Dec 28, 2012, 02:06 PM »
Walked around a local lake today in north oakland county. The ice was holding my 306lb just fine till i wondered a bit deeper and it buckled under me. Cut my hand on the ice getting out. Guess it needs a few more days.

The thickness varied caus i was fine walking on it for 10 minutes till it broke. I would guess close to 2 inches. Hand was cut in a few places with the skin peeling off in one spot but i didnt even feel it get cut and noticed the blood afterward.

360lbs and 2" of ice does not usually end well.  Glad you got out ok, but you are 200lbs more than me and I still have major pucker on 2" of ice.  Might want to wait for a couple more inches!! :o

btw never fallen thru over my head i am gutsy not dumb i never venture out past five feet till there is three+ inches of good ice. ice picks are the one of the best inventions ever make getting out much easier always.

Yeh i am the same way. I dont mind getting wet but not over my head. Hand is healing up well and i will be out there tommorow again with my gear this time fishing. I think the last few days made the ice over the shallows safe enogh. Will report back l8r.

I went through last year on 2" of ice in 12' of water. Fortunately I had a PFD as well as screwdrivers. Afterwards, I was informed that if you need those items to go icefishing, then perhaps you shouldn't be ice fishing! I'm a litle more cautious this year!

Whoever informed you of that, knows nothing about ice fishing.  I wear my AA suit and picks everytime I go on the ice.  2" or 20" you never know what can happen.  Step on a spring, or over thin ice on top of a weed bed, etc....It doesn't take any more effort to have your picks on you at all times.  Same thing with a pfd or a suit that will float you.

Don't forget that even if you are in five feet of water there can be three feet of mud and or muck on the bottom. Stay safe

So true I lost a boot once just off shore, few inches of water the muck went dam near to my knee. Boy a wet foot walking in the snow stings.
