New ION auger shaft convertion
« on: Sep 25, 2012, 11:09 AM »
Ok, anyone know anything about this bad boy yet. http://www.ioniceaugers.com/

I'm in the market for a new auger and the idea of a lightweight, 8" battery powered auger is pretty attractive.

Again, I was just curious if anyone has any experience or knows anything about these.

Thanks

So, any of you guys seen this yet? http://www.ioniceaugers.com/
Looks pretty cool. I like the idea of it a lot actually. I'm in the market for something and came across this today and just curious if anyone knows anything about it yet. I can't locate any reviews online but I sort of expected that considering it's a brand new product.

It's supposed to be their cream-of-the-crop, innovative, no holds barred auger....saw some early films and demo's of it....looked well thought out, but that price... :pinch:

I see it advertised for 499.99. Some of the gas ones are close to it. No smelly gas or fumes and drills a bunch of holes would make it worth it to me.

I agree. When you look at everything else it's not that far off base in price.

your limited to 40 holes a day though, thats not a big seller in my book.  I imagine you could get spare batteries, but Im sure they aren't cheap.

40 holes through 24" of ice.  Obviously it will be more holes with thinner ice.  Spare batteries are $150.

I've been looking hard at these ! I got a strikemaster Electra last year and love it ! I drill bout 15 or so when I go .
Last yr nothing deeper than 14 inches . No gas n mix no fumes ! I paid about 350 for it with the extension .
I would jump at the ion except for 2 things 1. It's new it's gonna have bugs ! 2. With the Electra you hook to any other battery source ( be it a wheeler or battery in the fish out )
But wow 40 holes !!

I agree with that some days I find the fish on the first few holes somedays I search and search and search.

I personally will stick with the old reliable 2 stroke gas augers. I like the smell and they are very simple, if you want more holes add more gas. I saw a 'gator in action last year, and although it was pretty slick, it is  not for me. I am sure this ion is a nice machine, but  I will stick with gas. Mixing gas is just as simple as remembering to plug in a battery in my opinion, and one of my favorite sounds in the pre-dawn silence is my old reliable jiffy punching holes to the "promised land".

To me, electric auger are a niche product. They have some serious upside, but they are not a replacement for gas. They are perfect for the wheel house guys, I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't want one. They are also for the guys who are about listening to the football game and watching flags. They rarely drill more than a couple dozen holes, because they are setting up a spread. The point of a spread is to cover ground without moving a bunch.

They ARE NOT for guys like me. I will drill between 5 and 100 holes per trip, and sometimes only go home long enough to sleep and make a fresh pot of coffee between trips to the lake. It takes time to charge batteries, more time than I have to wait. I will often fish till midnight on a Fri, and roll out of bed and head right back out by 6am the next morning. This is why I have spare flasher batteries for all my stuff. If I went with an electric auger, I would need spares for that too. The cost would become prohibitively high...

I think I will be getting a 36volt Bosh cordless for less money and be able to use it the rest of the year... The Ion looks great, but for the price I can buy many spare batteries and still have money left over.

I have never drilled more than 20 holes a day and have no problem catching fish. And those 20 holes were for 3 guys.

No thanks, too much walking and too much hole drilling for me.. I'm a simple guy, hand auger and a short walk to my spot.

A little off topic, but Skipper, are the perch very easy to target in Mill Lacs?

Looks neat but riddle me this? How will you replace that wonderful early morning smell of burning pre-mix exhaust and the symphony of two-stroke motors thats echos across the lake?  :P

Go 2-strokes!  ;D

Pete

Or the smell of freshly melted plastic when you accidentally brush against your 2 stroke and melt a hole in those new gloves/snow suit? lol

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

You have handles on your auger?? I'm picturing you just puching down on the top of the flywheel or something. It would be hard for me to melt a glove on my Jiffy. I would have to jam my hand up against the muffler or something.

Yeah but then you have to walk all over drilling hundreds of holes, right?

I walk 20 feet from the parking lot to my spot, drill two holes, and catch a mess of panfish then go home.
