Need new hand auger
« on: Aug 30, 2012, 08:22 PM »
Hi guys, I'm in the market for a new hand auger and I'm just trying to decide which to buy. Last one I had was a 6" mora lazer auger which I loved, but I've been hearing alot about the Nils auger. Just wondering if the Nils is that much better than the Mora Lazer?
I thank God for everything in my life. But I especially thank God for ice.

I can honestly tell you that a Nils is a lot better than a Lazer. I bought a "used 1 time" 6 inch Nils from an older gentleman and after I used it, I didn't use my heavy 3.0 Jiffy for the rest of the season.  I have since sold my Jiffy, and purchased an 8 inch Nils with power head so I can switch the 6 and 8 inch out when needed. My brother laughed at me when I showed up at the lake with it. He wasn't laughing when I out drilled his 2 horse Jiffy 6 inch stealth with my 8 horse. :)  I havent used the power head that much because it is so easy to use it as a hand auger. I am impressed and the power head isn't even broke in yet!

I can honestly tell you, you wont tell the difference between a Lazer and a Nils if you put an off-set handle on a Lazer...
This one has a few thousand holes under it's belt, and I have drilled a ton with a Nils also...  @) @) Nothing against Nils but the handle makes a huge difference.
Also, Strikemaster came out with a new lighter Lazer Synthetic this year...

Own a 6" NorMark Fin-Bore III, twin grip, double offset handle, uses the same blades as a Lazer. Also own a Nils Master 8" power auger, came with a handle to convert to hand use, the NorMark handle is of better quality, IMHO. The twin grip, offset handle design is more efficent because your using both hands while drilling.

I vote nils, I also have a strikemaster hand auger and the strike master is my backup. The difference is amazing. The nils is a little different to use but once you get used to it your off and running.good luck and tight lines  :icefish:

I'll put up a vote for the Finbore.
Nils, Lazer, Finbore. You'll smoke most gas augers in a 5 hole race with any of them and it doesn't take He-Man to do it.
I'm sure none of these companies have too much of a leg up on each other.
A big kudos to all of them in the market. They're going to end up making gas augers obsolete or have to start dropping prices for them to sell.  ;D

ive had a few different hand augers and been able to use a few of my buddies.i started off with an ht piece of garbage and they sent me a whole new auger, still junk. then i had a mora. decent hand auger. got to use a lazer which was sweet compared to the mora and then a finbore micro which was great. i purchased a nils after all this and i would say its better than the finbore because i own it and use it more but in the end theyre probably about the same. nils or finbore you will be good.youll be glad you purchased it.

i have used and owned all kinds of hand screws my 4" and 6" tanaka [nills ]are about 30 yrs old and just bought another 6" due to a cracked flight in the old one which i will get welded , i spend three months a year 5 days a week on the ice and they are still drilling , not to get any panties in a bunch, put the two side by side and see the quality of the two right off the bat the welding , paint and heft , and they are only a few bucks more , but what does a senile ol buzzard know, but what ever you buy will be the best

I like my 8" Lazer hand auger, but its the only one I've owned other than my Jiffy STX power unit.  Over 10" of ice and I really don't like to drill "too many" holes though.

I was just on the strikemaster site and I do not see a offset handle for my ld-8.  I sent them a email because I am very interested in one.  Was actually thinking of going to a battery auger this winter but will see.

I got a Nils 6" auger two years ago and learned to like it.  Last year when I added an adapter to use my 18volt Porter Cable drill, I learned to love it!  Each battery drilled 20 or so holes in 8" or more of ice.

+1 on the 6" nils. I have had mine for 3 seasons with the original blades. Worth the extra cash for sure.

NorMark Fin-Bore III vs Nils, hand augers; it seem that they are close too even. I have used both and could not pick up on a difference. My thought is that over time the NorMark Fin-Bore III looks like the better choice (for me) because the blades. You can carry another set of blades for less money, and sharpening is less problematic... I often hike into remote ponds to ice fish, carrying a Nils head vs another set of blades... I am sure that many Nils owner will say theirs cuts better and maybe they do, but the the difference seems small... So the question is; am I wrong about the "Blades" I know I have a couple guys around here (Central MA) that can sharpen blades like the NorMark Fin-Bores, but not the Nils?
