Heating an Ice shack
« on: Dec 04, 2011, 09:39 AM »
I am looking for a way to heat my ice shack without taken up a lot of room. I have been looking at the direct vent heaters but seems like those need power to run or require thick walls in order to install. Anyone have any ideas?

Mr. Buddy heater on the floor connected to a propane tank outside with conversion line into shack. Simple, cheap, warm, one full tank will last a long time, and it's safe. Don't forget the CO detector.

I have a empire direct vent in both my shacks, all you need is the vinynal siding kit to make it the right thickness for the wall.

Lots of times we just use the same Coleman stove we use to cook on.  I have the one that burns unleaded as well as coleman, cheap way to heat and takes up little space.  I have young kids as well, no worries, the door is always open and shut enough. ;D

I have a wood stove that will drive you out, but the best thing about wood is that iyt won't sream up the windows. I use Mr. Buddy for my portable. the wood stove is 16"x12"x13" and has fire bricks for the walls and bottom of the stove.

Direct vent heater is the way to go if you sleep in your shack.  They are safe and efficient.  Mine are mounted on walls framed with 2x2's and I put plywood behind the heater and cut the vent hole out through it.

i have a cast iron propane burner i bought thru northern tool. like 40 bucks. got a grill tank outside w/ a regulator and run the hose thru a hole in the shack near the burner. i just took a old regulator w the plastic knob from a old grill and put it together w/ pipe clamps. makes for easy swap outs w/ no tools. whats nice is you can cook on this too. my portable i use a 1 burner colman fuel stove. a little hard to lite in - deg. weather till' you get the hang of it, but will blow you out of the shack. its so hot. very portable. fits in my backpack.

I have a duel heater that mounts right on a propane tank or to the wall for when I first get to my shack then I have a wood stove for the rest of the time.

Had a big buddy heater but got tired of it raining inside and not being able to see out the windows.

Now I have a small stove and it was the best thing I ever did for the shack.

i had the same problem. 2,  3in. vents 6in from the ceiling took care of the problem. you lose a little heat but will get rid of the moisture for you. i use the ones w/ the angled slats so no rain or snow comes in.

i use an 11,000 btu heater/cooker from cabelas. lighter, smallers and safer then a woodstove. i have a 10' hose to a 20# tank outside. the tank lasts all season w/ still enough gas to use it in the grill during the summer and thats fishing every weekend. my shack is 6x11. the only down side is no heat controll. it gets top about 95-110degrees depending on the outside temp. i may try my new coleman flat top coostove this year as a heat source because of the heat controll. ive used wood stoves in the past. You don't want an unvented propane burner.  One of the byproducts of burning propane is water vapor.  If the exhaust is not vented to the outside, the inside of your shack will be wet.  I like to keep the rain outside the shack,  not in it.  A direct vent heater should be fine.  If the wall needs to be thicker for installation just add thickness to a 1 foot by 1 foot square where the vent is going.  I prefer a wood stove to heat my shack but I will admit that carrying firewood on to the ice is more work than a propane tank.

another thing thats nice w/ propane ,i leave mine on very low when im not at the shack. keeps things thawed out and used very little propane. and like was said if you have vents installed, no fumes or moisture issues.

Where do you guys recommend for locating the vents? My shack is not very air tight by, but I would like to be more strategic compared to leaving the door cracked lol. Thanks!

as for empire heaters you can just use smoke pipe for your vent, i believe its 5in and 3 inch one inside each other. i also believe you can cut that to any size you want for length. if it is a empire and you want to know more about it just p.m. me.        -AZ

mine are located near the ceiling on opposite sides of the shack. all it takes is the 3in. round ones w/ the angled slats. i cut the holes w/ a jigsaw then caulked around the vent inside and out. some people hang a small battery powered fan near the ceiling pointing down to help even out the heat in the shack also.
