Adirondack Lakes still have safe ice?
« on: Mar 16, 2011, 11:53 AM »
Just curious if the many lakes in the Adirondacks still have safe ice?  How long does the safe ice hang around for?

I know it these are very broad questions, but I was thinking about wether or not a 5 hour (one way) road trip was worth it......

You will find solid ice up in the 'daks for the next 3 weeks if you look hard enough.   I'd say this weekend most places will still be accessable.

No safe ice here stay away. Now to be honest we have layers still 8" snow ice 6" slush and 8 to 10" of black ice. When the top layer lets go it will be tough to get around till it gets down to the black ice again.
Meachum is not open the road is not plowed.

A couple of weeks, all depending on rain and runoff.  Forecast is for warmer temps.  Ice is good, but some spots ice breaking at shoreline.

Thank you for the info. Any recommendations on lakes, leaving out of camp at Star Lake. We don.t mind driving a hour and a half.

Massive ice (2ft+ easily) in Essex County...

Trouble is, if you have to walk through the woods to access your lake of choice, there is an equal amount of snow under the trees still.  They got snow up there when everything south of Saratoga got rain.

Makes for some pretty rugged walking, no doubt.

I'm still sore from the past weekend's adventures....

Same here! I measured close to 30" on sunday with at least half of that good solid black ice. I fully expect to be jigging next weekend unless of course we get a nuclear spring next week and a massive meltdown! Don't see that happening. All I see happening is adding to my Laker totals for the ice season and keep feeding my addiction!

Good luck out there!

While most Adirondack lakes are likely still okay, I think Indian Lake is shot.  Tried fishing the lower basin today and my partner went in up to his crotch in slush along the shore.  I'm not sure how the northern part of the lake is but I suspect there is lots of slush on top as I didn't notice any reasonably fresh snowmobile tracks leading out onto the lake.  I think this lake is different than a lot of the northern lakes because it is controlled by a dam and the level seems to fluctuate.  Plan on trying a different lake tomorrow.

Biggest problem is all that snow ice on top. We had the same thing 3 years ago. Went out on Sunday and bottomed the auger to get through. By that Friday the ice was out. Be careful guys!!

I fished Indian Lk. @ the town line yesterday and got on with no problem.  Seven smelt, few dink perch and one flag, pretty slow.

I would like to fish Blue Mountain Lake on Sunday.  I heard that the only spot to get on was at the beach.  I was wondering if it is marked well?  I have never fished the lake before.  Lake Eaton was very slow last weekend and I thought I would try someplace new.
