Get Your Thrills with a Nils!
« on: Dec 30, 2010, 05:36 PM »
Don't understand why my original "Nils Nils Nils Nils Nils Nils Nils Nils Tanaka!" thread got banished to the Grumpy Old Men Thread, and then LOCKED on top of that!

While some other brands of augers have been free to continue their brand worship here.

Nils Owners Unite!  Stand up for your right to drill holes faster, leaner, and meaner than your competition!
Don't let this oppression sway you to another brand!  Demand equal drilling rights!
Nils cuts better.
Tanaka drives it faster.   Starts easier.  Is much lighter!

Esox where are you?  You always chime in on every Nils thread?

MD

You guys convinced me.  I ordered a Tanaka powerhead from Cabela's to put on my 8" Nils.  Hopefully I won't have to wait long.

I ordered one from Cabelas over a month ago and it just barely shipped.  I am patient so I have not lost my cool yet, I know this auger will last me a decade probably and work very well for a long time.

Can't wait to use it this will be my first power auger.  The ice up here in Wyoming will be 2 feet or more easily by march at a lake i fish.  So glad I wont be drilling that deep with the hand auger anymore.
Hmmmmmm.  I just got an email this morning saying mine would be shipped in 1-2 weeks.  We'll see.  I feel like a little kid waiting for Xmas to arrive.

I have a pair 4 and a 6 hand augers they are the the orignal tanakas about 20 years old still going strong fish about 5 out of 7 days got a spare set of heads so if i need them sharpened i still am out fishing and the guy JP from nills told me to send them to does an awsome job cut just like new ,nothing faster, off set handles are so much better than a knob and one hand drilling

All I have to say is Nils does no advertising anwhere that I watch.  The main way they do their business is by word of mouth and places like this.  Even still they are basically sold out everywhere you go or look and have to be ordered in.  I have the 8 inch with powerhead and it outcuts every other auger on the market and weighs about half as much.  I love guys saying 40 lb augers are fine, then watch them lug them around and cut 4 holes by the time I cut 15.  ITS NILS OR NOTHING!

I can't wait to get my Nils. Ordered it on Dec 20th. 8 inch with Tanaka Head. Still back ordered, but Jax Cat Tackle (place that I ordered it) said they should ship next week. Seems like theres a lot of people waiting for their baby to come in.

Got to try it out today and it is all I hoped it would be. Went through 14" of ice like a dream. Did find I needed to stop halfway and clean out all the shavings. Will be my last drill for sure. AND to top it off caught a 27" channel cat on a pimple with wax worm on 4# test. Was a thrill, glad I had my gaff. Two other peeps tried it out and they were impressed too. I have another 6" on the way and would consider taking offers....

My 6" arrived today after a 2 week back order.  Will be trying it out Saturday.  I will post my thoughts then.

Any help as to who sharpens the heads?

Paul

I got my 6" last week.  I've only had to drill thru about six inches of ice, but I can do a hole in about 4-5 seconds...  Cuts great.  Can't wait to get more ice to see how it handles a foot or more.

Took the new Nils out for it's first trip!

It's a keeper, worth every penny!

I was considering a power auger, but didn't feel like pulling 30 extra pounds.

Love it!

Just need to get you the tanaka power head, ~20lbs for a full setup.

My 8" Nils/ Tanaka combo arrived today, just got back from starting to break her in. Started 3rd pull after pouring in fresh 91 octane mixed with Amsoil. Mixed 1/2g of gas to one 1.5 oz packet of Amsoil Sabre 100:1 mix. Such a great smell. Once this 1/2g is gone I will switch to just running 100:1 from then out.

Best part is I can toss on my 6" Nils if I want to go even lighter when in search of panfish.

Always thought you wanted to break in with non-synthetic and normal mix,
then switch to 100:1 type. ???

I use Opti2 in my Jiffy.  I called Opti2, and did some research.......what I came up with is that it really doesnt matter.  They used to recommend a break-in with regular 2 stroke oil, because it enabled more friction, but engine technology and tolerances are so much better than they used to be, that it really isnt necessary any more.
