Hey James were you in the black portable, I was out anchoring my house down today right behind you, the guys in the blue portable were hammering a lot of perch but it looks like they left them all over the ice.

that was us. i saw your house there, but i didnt see you, or i would have came over and said hi.

we caught nothing but perch the whole time we were there. they must have been after the smelt, because the fish finder was showing big schools of them, and then we started seeing lots of them just under the ice.

I think the rule is referring to Open Water that is the area not normally covered with ice in the winter, 500 feet from the Merrymetting River and etc.

You cannot fish within 500 feet of the bridge in Alton Bay. The Merrymeeting river is closed for ice fishing. Last year I had my bobhouse about 50 yards north of the bandstand on Jan 6th and hammered lakers on smelt in 30 FOW.

During the winter; starting Jan 1 you cannot fish within 500 feet of the bridge in Alton Bay as well as where gunstock river enters the lake and a few other spots like Paugus bay (weirs channel) where it usually does not freeze over.  During open water season it is legal to fish there is and is a very popular spot for salmon seekers. The Merrymeeting river between the Route 11 bridge and the dam in Alton is Fly fishing only, catch and release, and barbless hooks for most of the open water season (spring and fall); except when the salmon are not running. You will have to check the dates and rules in the abstracts to be sure, but I dont have one in front of me, so please dont take this as gospel. I own a dock on the Merrymeeting river and saw some extra large salmon this year spawning in my slip (5+ pounders) with large rainbows sweeping in behind them sucking up the eggs- the rainbows where as fat as footballs toward the end of October, and no; I did not see any with tags in them.

There I am watching the channel 9 news about 5:45PM tonight and they show my bobhouse with my Jeep parked next to it and a warning to fishermen that the ice is not safe to drive on, and they pan over to the open water by the swim dock which has a circulater keeping the ice from forming all winter long and saying there is still plenty of open water. And Mike Haddad makes a comment about my Jeep being parked on the ice with open water nearby. Give me a break! I had 13" of solid black ice under me, they never came out to ask how much ice I was on, but pretty much made me look stupid. I also had three trucks drive out to me today to ask "how much ice is there????" I have been driving on the ice for 40 years and I always know how much ice BEFORE I drive on, Ch 9 shows my shanty with my name, address and tel.# and liscense plates of my Jeep in their video and never even talked to me. Good thing I was'nt taking a leak.
