congrats!!! i would think about Gene Bahr doing it...ive seen two large togue by him... my buddys 20 lber and another 27 lber from sebago... they may cost a lot more but they will never crack...last a lifetime, and to me that would be worth the extra!

without a doubt. a fish like that i'd get a repro from him and a real mount somewhere else. that should be on display. and 1 at home.  ;)

Kimball,
The BIO that looked at my 12# Togue last spring estimated it between 22-24 years old.... So this brute is up there in age!!

Thanks for all the congrats everyone! I am still reeling(no pun intended) from all the stir this thing has caused. Does anyone have any idea how much weight a fish like that will lose in bodily fluids after 5 hours? He weighed 31lbs 3 1/2 hours after I caught him. He then maxed out a 30lb scale at Indian Hill about an hour later and finally 29.67 at Countryside Meats in Dover 5 hours after being caught. Would he have eclipsed the state record if I had headed home right when I caught him? I couldn't believe I had to go over 50 miles just to find a scale that could weigh him. Something is just not right with that.

Story and pics to follow hopefully this evening. BTW......10" hole...no chiseling but did have to keep getting the line out of grooves it was cutting into the ice in the bottom of the hole. A bit over a half hour to land him.

It would have been damn close Bill.  I wouldn't dwell on it either way, unbelievable fish for sure.  This is the first serious challenge to the record in forever.  There was a high 20's out of W.G. in the 90's but other than that I'd say Day's 27#pounder is the only other one that comes to mind.  Congrats again.   Did they take a scale from the fish to try and date its age?

I was thinking about the state record last night. I noticed the blood, it definitely could have been the state record when it was first pulled in. Fish that size could easily loose a pound, pound and a half. Doesn't really matter, it is an amazing fish.

Try the fish weight formula and see what you get for a weight.

The Formula:

((Girth x Girth) x Length) / 800 = weight in pounds
(girth and length are inches)...................... .............

Example:
If the fish’s girth is 15 inches and its length is 29 inches, the formula would be used as follows:

15 x 15 x 29, divided by 800 = 8.16 pounds
Then the ".16" or "16/100" is converted to ounces (multiply by 16)
.16 x 16 = 2.56 or 3 ounces
so this fish is 8 pounds 3 ounces

State record or not that is one heck of a fish, please don't dwell on it to much (although i do understand your feelings).  You have a fish of many lifetimes right there and you have caught something that most of us on here and most fisherman can only dream about catching, congrads once again and don't worry about the record.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Congrats, what a monster.  Did you catch it on a jig pole or a trap?

The cool thing is that you know there are others in there that big and probably bigger.  Get at it boys, got about 120 square miles to cover.
