40lb. northern!
« on: Mar 03, 2009, 06:14 AM »
Did anyone see the picture in the Free Trader of the almost 40 lb. northern pike caught in Long Lake?  Did that look like a 40 pounder?  I thought the guy holding it must be a giant, if that was a 40 pound pike!

If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

A friend of mine from the DEC sent me the info on this pike a few weeks ago.  Here is what the guy said who caught it:

"45" long, 21" Girth, 25lbs based on a deer scale being the digital scale
that Will had up at the camp was not reading right, it actually read 25 then
went to 17 then to 0, think we confused the digital scale:) so we all think
it was around 30lbs."

I'm pretty sure the newspaper got it wrong.  Monster fish!

I dont know where 40lbs came from..and by the looks of the fish it doesnt even look 25lbs.  If the scale read 25lbs, and then 17lbs, and then 0...then how do you figure the fish weighed 30lbs???  To me, the fish looks to be about 17-20lbs...the guy in the picture must be a giant too, because the fish looks tiny in his hands...nice fish though!

That picture has been making the rounds for years now.  Every time it goes around it says it was caught at a different place.  So far I've heard:  Europe, Russia, Great Slave Lake, Lake Winnipeg, Niagra River...now Long Lake and Rainy Lake.    I wonder where it was really caught!

I dont care where it was caught, the pic of the monster chomping on the smaller pike in the water near the boat is priceless. A video of him scooping it up with a net would be awesome to see!

Here's the story that didn't make the paper.
This guy won a ice fishing gear give-away at Nemac's in Warrensburg.  Got hold of his brother in law and said take me fishing for pike.  They were on Long Lake and it was the first pike the guy ever caught ice fishing, so you can imagine his excitement.
It was 45" in length.  The scale only went to 20 pounds where they went to weigh it.  So they took it to a deer scale and of course it wasn't very accurate but somewhere between 25-30 pounds was declared bragging rights.
The picture was sent to the DEC and Fisheries added it was a healthy female.
The picture and info was sent to the papers where the person writing the article you read, well you know that.
He was back ice fishing Long Lake this past weekend and received the misprinted article with "You are now a Legend in your own Mind"  haunting him all day by his so called friends.  Now his so called are having a ball working on trying to enhance the photo to what the extra 20 pounds would look like.  No, not on him, on the pike.

This article was in last weeks "Free Trader Today dated Feb. 28.  I went out and dug it out of the trash.  The picture says the guy's name is Randy Powll and the caption states he is showing off the "nearly 40-pound Nothern Pike he caught recently on Long Lake."  The picture shows him and his friend Abe Gadway and Powell is holding the pike vertically (not horizontally) and (to me) it doesn't look much over 15-16 lbs.  The article was written by John Gereau.

I'm pretty sure the newspaper got it wrong.  Monster fish!

By using this formula you can get a good estimate of a fish's weight if no scale is available.

Girth X Girth X Length divided by 800 = weight.

    21 X 21= 441 X 45=19845 divided by 800= 24.80625 lbs.

Not 40lbs. but sure a nice PIKE !!!!!!!
