I found ice out hunting this evening but remembered 2 things...

1/4" of ice doesn't hold up 250lbs
and I still wish there were an open season on people illegally riding atvs on state land

You ought to have about 1/4 on the lake you pictured by morning. Might not last, but it's a start.

The past two days a small pond down the road from my house has successfully stayed frozen throughout the days. Its about time some of the big lakes start to freeze up!

Its ironic.. Last March into April, I had an itch for the ice to melt so I could go bass fishing. Unfortunately, the temperatures stayed down into mid April, and I didnt get out till late April..

Now, I REALLY wanna go ice fishing, but it's not looking good. We had a cold spell over the weekend, and I saw some skim ice on Black Moshannon (probably the lake that first freezes up closes to me) last week. Unfortunately they're calling for a day or two of temperatures in the 50s this week, which is disappointing, since I've been on the ice before Christmas the last two or three years.  >:(

I was hunting  in Bradford county, near Troy over the weekend.   It  got down to about 28  Friday night, and that was  about as cold as it got.   There was  skim ice on one of the ponds  we walked by,   but nothing  on 3 or 4  other little ponds.    I went home  Saturday night,  but I think it was colder up there   sat night/sunday.

Down here by Harrisburg we had 24 this am at my place.   Nice, but  things aren't going to be locked up down here for at least a little while.

Checked out Hills Creek and some farm ponds last night. Ponds are iced up and Hills Creek about skimmed over.  It's going to be a couple weeks yet before Tioga County sees safe ice though.  Highs in the 40's these next few days will have these opened up again.  Hoping by January 1st we see some stable ice on the small lakes at least!

I just checked the NOAA forecast for Pocono Pines which I keep book marked because....... ;) Anyway, there is only one day in the forties for the seven day (Thurs.), and they are calling for 40-50% chance of frozen rain, and 45 for a high. If that holds true; I know a big if, and there isn't real rainfall, I believe you might actually be building some decent ice by the weekend, at least on smaller ponds and lakes. So the glass is still half full (of ice) in my eyes.

Got out on the ice in the upper reaches of Black Moshannon lake yesterday.  2-1/2 inches of ice.  Only brave enough to go out where the water is 4-5' deep.  Tried out the new Eskimo power auger I bought a month ago. The ice was no match for it.    I couldn't wait to try out my new vex FL-20.  Even though the water was 4' deep it picked up fish right away.  I caught one pickerel 14" jigging and besides that nothin for the first hour.   Then bam!  Flags flying everywhere.  Ice cracking as I move from tipup to tipup pulling out jumbo perch one after another hardly able to rebait and reset fast enough to get to the next flag.  My new vexilar is sitting idle because I'm too busy hammering the jumbo perch on tipups.  My hands are froze to the point of frostbite from all of the tipup action! Finally I have too much of the perch making me keep my hands out of my warm gloves so I pull the tipups.  Once in the shanty I barely get my jig in the water and start hammering the big slabs!  The whole screen on the vex is solid red and I can see the huge school of slabs through the thin ice.  My 5 gallon bucket is nearly full when something weird happens.  Beep, beep, beep, beep. No!

guys, I know I've been quiet, but I've been practically living in Erie and Pulaski.

Got back today, theres an inch of ice on the lakes out there, along the southern tier expressway.  lake Chautauqua was skimmed over, I couldn't believe it.  I's be ice fishing by next weekend if I was still there, but alas, gotta watch the ice grow down south here.

Everything is locked up here in Emerlad lakes.  I'll type away another epogy tomorrow with some pics, but for right now, I'm beat sorting out steel from three days of Polish vodka and madness in Erie.

Actually took a ride up to Moshannon today, probably about 2-2.5 inches in the thickest areas, even took baby steps about 5 or so feet out without any buckling or cracking. Im thinking late next week, if the rain holds off a bit, and it stays cold at night.

Wow. I would not have thought Mosh was so far along. I guess the altitude and shallow depth allowed it to build some ice.

Does anyone know how the lakes in Poconos are looking? Tobhanna, Gouldsboro, or Pocono Lake?

I was out and about   on some business trips the last few days.  Went by the lake at montour preserve in Columbia county,   Up over 7 mountains on 322  north of lewisburg in Mifflin county , and past Colyer lake  near state college.

Nothin -- not even a hint of skim ice.

maybe we will all be hunting for Miser's  Emerald lakes  LOL

so far today the ice survived on the ponds. Lots of water on the ice but it survived the heaviest rain and warmest temps.

I'm going to check the ice after the Thursday rain. If the lakes still have a cap I'm drilling a few holes on Friday.   Mark

Mark D how are we looking in your area ?

The lakes are still frozen. We did not get much rain, it is 50 F right now. I will drill a few test holes tomorrow late afternoon and measure the ice thickness. Mark

Thats good news, thanks Mark for the update.

I guess 50 degree nights tend to do that.
