Wow...bit off with 30lb 7-strand stainless
« on: Feb 26, 2011, 03:54 PM »
Had a nice Pike on today, bit me off with 30lb test stainless leader.  Was such a clean cut, looked like someone did it with scissors.  Never thought it'd ever happen with that stuff...think I lost a real nice one.

Haha, I wish, because that'd make me feel better!   ::)    Line was going out faster than the spool could give it.  No turtles I know can swim that fast.

Yeah, apparently so!  So now I'm starting to question my setups.  I was running 7-strand 30lb stainless purposely to AVOID this from happening by using mono/floro.  Is this just a freak thing?  Should I use something else?  With all the time spent waiting for that one moment that a big Pike is on the line and to lose it like that is just heartwrenching...I don't want to lose one that way again.

that sucks... i fish with 40lb floro leader when targeting pike...i have only caught smaller pike so far up to about 7 lbs but i wonder if it will hold up to a 20lb pike.. i guess it all matters how it is hooked.... I would hate to loose my first really big one. I have caught some smaller pike on 20 lb floro as well... but for a fish to bite through metal makes me nervous about my set up.. i also have used some heavy steel as well but i prefer using the 40 floro. I have read of guys using as thick as 80lb floro but that just seems too thick and stiff to me...

I think the brand is AFW or AFV?  From Cabellas, comes as an unboxed spool and says it's leader/trolling line.  30lb test comprised of 7 strand stainless.

I gotta agree, that's a hefty leader to bite thru. Definitely sounds like you had something else on there.

would not be out of the realm of possibilities that you may have damaged the leader during the crimping process, does'nt take much damage to cause a clean break failure.

yikes!

In prep for our champlain trip, Porter and I crimped up 15 leaders with Toothy Critter from Cortland. In the crimping process, porter show that he goes through the sleeve 3 times before crimping. You could tow a truck with this thing!

Totally agree with Formerly... Probably a defective/bad crimp.... I can't see that leader being bit through.... no way...

it had to have been either a failed crimp, shave or kink u might not have noticed or sometimes if the edge of the crimp digs into the wire it can cause a weak spot and break off. definately sucks.

Well again I wish that was the case!   ::)  I don't crimp my leaders.  I run the leader through the hook eye twice and then using a weight clipped on to the end of the line to pull it tight, holding the hook and leader swing the weight around wrapping the line end back around about 20-30 wraps.  It creates no pressure points, no chance of making a weak spot and distributes the pressure when a fish is on.  It's how I was taught to do it to avoid the exact problem examples with steel that you guys are suggesting could've happened.  And I felt it for a couple seconds before it bit off, was definitely tugging like a fish...

Wow!

 ???

Must have bit through it then ha? Sounds like a switch to the Toothy Critter! with toothy, I would strongly reccomend a crimp deal. It is SO CLEAN! and strong as hell....  Looks like you're going to have to go back and try and get that monstah above the ice!  >:(

Good luck!

Mutant strain, you've got the former Grace Chemical, Honeywell and the beautiful Sudbury dump leaching into the river, all of which are just cast away from the banks.
