sounds like a combo of one tiny bad spot(poor QC)in the leader and one hell of a fish. I got broken off at the nip 2 years ago on toothy critter but it was an error in leader tying on my part. So many variables to landing a big fish. That's why my trophy room is still empty. Keeps you going back

Fish tales and sharp teeth.  I spoke to some guides
from canada who have landed many 20# plus pike on 25-40# floro and my
my own experience with fish with a meaner bite (bluefish) I gotta say hogwash or swamp monster.  If a 18# blue doesnt cut 50# floro in normal battle then I don't find it feasible for a pike to do so!

All I have used for steel for the past ten years or so, are 12# test Invisi-Leaders.  Have caught many huge pike and lake trout, and never had one sever a leader.  Can't imagine a 30# leader being cut.

Was it cut next to the ferrule, by any chance?  Perhaps the crimp was the culprit.........

Nope, it was 3-4" above the hook, seemed like he swallowed it and bit me off through the actual leader, nothing knot or wrap related.  The weirdest part was that since I'm using 7-strand which is comprised of 7 smaller strands of stainless to create the one 30# leader line, if it were a line weakness or abrasion or anything like that, I'd expect the line to be all frayed at the break point.  But where I got bit off, it's a super clean cut and all 7 strands are cut in the same identical spot and are all the same length and not frayed.

Oh and fish tales?  Haha, C'mon guys, gimme a break.  Had 2 other ppl with me that witnessed it all.  They were just as upset as I after seeing the line flying off that spool.   :'(

But, why would a beaver take a hook, unless it was baited with aspen?  ;D

If the 7 strand was more then a year or two old it could of been some of the bad stuff I read about lots a couple years ago.    Guys were having break off problems using 7 strand 30 lb wire.   The company recalled a bunch and replaced the complaints.   You could of had some of the same stuff.

Aha, I'd buy that as the best explanation yet aside of a Pike on steroids with scissors.   ;D    It was from an old spool I got from a friend.  Freshly tied on, but older itself.  I just keep imagining how crazy that line was flying out and how big it felt before the leader broke...and the river's open water already, I can't end my Fairhaven ice season like that!!!    ::)

Ok maybe it wasn't a beaver.
Maybe the pike had it, was running with the bait when it was abducted by aliens and the alien tractor beam was so strong it just sheared the steel.

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

It was probably an alien beaver with pike-tooth scissors.  Glad we narrowed it down.

I have had pike break me off too many times in that bay... last year I had one 20-25lbs break me off at the boat. was the tie able stainless leader 30lb clean cut. I could see a pike cutting that because its not really like steel leaders, never know in that bay. lol

now that i think about it i have caught bluefish and tuna on the same leader... it may be the pressure of the pike being so close when you set the hook...puts a lot of load on the hook/leader.

So should I be using something different for a leader?  I've been chasing the big one all season, sucks to lose it like that.  Don't want it to happen again.

Years ago there was one named "hacksaw" in Chauncy. The line was'nt moving, straight down, when I picked up the tilt it exploded, backlashed and cutoff.
That's my only cutoff in over 20 yrs of pike fishing. I use 50-60# mono/floro. leader material.
It's all about how much pressure you put on the fish, it also helps not to set the hook when they're close to the hole.  :o

I named a pike that bit me off 15 years ago "Buzz Saw"....It still haunts me to this day
