Yanney Ice
« on: Jan 04, 2009, 06:30 PM »
The ice at Yanney is unsafe on the west side. There were a few people on it today but they were just asking for trouble. There was a small area of decent ice surrounded by open water. I've been know to fish on some risky ice at times but we immediately turned around and went to Cottonmill instead.

Be safe.

does that little lake have a spring in it or something.  I have been on it when it had way less ice than any surrounding water.

It does in a sense. Like all sandpits the west end is always the weakest from natural groundwater flows. The best I can figure is that because it's so deep in that west pocket (20') it allows a higher than average volume of slightly warmer groundwater to seep in. Also the way that area is shaped it magnifies the effect. That's my best guess anyway.
