Anyone ever had any success with crappies on tip-ups? If so, hows it done?

Yeah...I used fatheads on real small..."16 trebles and 8 lb mono leaders in 8-9 FOW a foot or 2 off bottom. This was a few years back on Kings bay..NY side of the lake.

thats what i catch em on. Use small baits with a #8 hook set higher in the water column so that crappie look up at your bait.

I target them on tip ups. You'll miss a few, and I usually go with smaller thin fat heads, 6# florocarbon leader to 40# tensile power pro braid{I have a bulk spool for surf casting}, #10 red gamigatsu salmon egg hooks through the bait's lips, and to mark the depth on the spool I use a heavy split shot on the top of the spool, so that the weight of the shot upon the take spins the spool without much force and the crappie don't feel it. I'm using old school wooden tip-ups.

I also fill the spool to capacity so the start up force need to spin the spool is much lighter. Last, I put small alligator clip-on cow bells on the flags so as soon as I get a flag up I hear it and get there.{I'm usually intensely focused on jigging}.

I've only ever caught decent sized crappie, about 10"-12"+, on the tip ups. The smaller crappie seem to spit the hook quicker.

I definitely catch more jigging though than via tip up.

Light line and a small hook. I use bb size weights. Only 1 though with a blue or gray but I have caught them on a sucker minnow before

tip downs in my eyes work better due to the fact that when the crappie takes the bait and tries to go it pretty much automatically sets the hook-I use 2 lb micro ice with a # 12 trout or circle hook on my crappie set up

If I'm going crappie fishing on the ice, I don't leave the house without tip downs ;)

4lb test,#14-18trebles,set that thing light as you can and keep them somewhat close to you so you catch more instead of running 50yds and missing fish.
Fatheads 2-3' off the deck, jig your tip ups a few times an hour.
