Well its a bit early.....but I couldnt wait.....
« on: Oct 21, 2008, 02:50 PM »
so this morning i go to this local anchorage lake, we call it beer can, they call it campbell point.. I brought a metal pipe and busted away all the ice around the dock that reaches 50-60 feet out into the water, and at the end of the dock the water is about 7-8 feet.  I dump some mikes extra strength shrimp oil in the water, put on a demon original jigging spoon, and within 5 minutes, i hooked into a 27 inch char..... landed him on 4 lb test. there were a few more bigger ones swimmin around. but its only one per day. so does this qualify towards landing my first fish of the hardwater season? what a great fish. keep in mind this lake is only about 7 acres and averages 5-13 feet deep.....ill post pics ASAP.

I'd say that if you were standing on the ice when you caught it, then it counts.  If you were standing on the dock I'd say it is disqualified.

damn! I was standing on the dock, the ice isnt more than 1/4 inch thick so you cant stand on it! went back with a buddy and caught even bigger ones, I caught a hawg that was 30" and my pal caught one that was 29 1/2"! AND THERE WERE EVEN BIGGER ONES SWIMMIN AROUND CHECKIN OUT OUR JIGS! we released em for later catching thru the ice! i dont know how good eating they would be, as they are spawning near the dock. three REALLY big ones were slammin into smaller ones with thier noses and pushing them away from an area. so strange behavior or no?  just for laughs...... one year we were fishing that lake and a midaged black dude came up with a fishin pole, rollin a cadilac, wearing a funny hat and a big fur coat and walked up the dock, and started tryin to chip at the ice with his pimp cane..... he said he was too afraid to stand on the ice! which was like 3 feet thick! we were trying so hard not to laugh, but it didnt work ....we were nice and drilled out a hole for him. but it was worth the laughs i guess.

i dunno....i just thought id try somethin new.....it worked to bring them in real close real fast....as well as it brought many smaller fish that the big ones like to feed on, you know what happens when you draw attention from the deeper waters... one time i was fishin there and i hooked a landlocked chinook salmon, about 8 inches long and just kinda playin him for a minute, and somethin real big made a strike at it, took the whole tail off of him. hmmmmmmm?

they stock here often in winter because of either 1)overfishing 2) common winterkills 3) to help motivate new people into the great sport of ice-fishing and help to stimulate the economy and keep everything moving smoothly.......people like to fish, they need gear so they buy it, the new gear helps them catch fish, everybody happy!

nice fish, was the char a native fish to that lake? or just get stocked with um?  lots of work goes into those stocked fish, spawning them is messy proposition.  tight lines
