Bait Tank 2.0
« on: Oct 13, 2008, 05:45 PM »
for years ive been using a 55 gal plastic drum on its side for a bait tank with a whisper aquarium filter. it has performed hroically and i will still use it to purge new bait. This year however,  I want to be able to keep , trap ,and or buy bait in larger quantity to cut costs and time. After much thought , planning and a litle trial and error, I think I have come up with a good system that will suit my needs just fine!

started with a 100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank from Tractor supply for 75 Bux.

added a few pcs of plexi glass from home depot for a cover,                25 bux

I wanted to draw from the bottom of the tank so out comes my hole saw and now there a hole in my 75 dollar tank  :D I used an old intex pool pump. 650 gph...i have 1000 gph in reserve if i feel i need more.

wherethe water returns to the tank i wanted something  i could trap insulation or fiber fill in but didnt want anything hanging above or submersed in the tank, so I decided to use a 4" pvc drainpipe and it worked perfectly!

and with that kind of suction I dont want my bait to get pinned to the intake so i bent a wir mesh guard that gives them a little buffer area

Total cost is about 150 bux and i think it will pay for itself before long

Truly a work of art Scotty - you carpenter types are always scheming :D  Must be some nice little farm ponds out back in all that pasture land you can raid ??? ;D  I actually enjoy catching my bait and view it as a type of fishing.  A couple of weeks of trapping and you'll have all you need for the season if things go well.

Nice set up but I see a potential problem. The wire mesh will rust and poison the tank. I've been keeping aquariums for years and that's a big no-no. If I were you, I'd switch it out for the plastic "gutter guard" or similar material. Best wshes!

What does it cost to power something like that? I know pool pumps aren't cheap to operate..

The way I set up my tank this year, I used a 70 gallon waterfall aquarium filter pump, with a 55 gallon plastic drum. The filter pump is supposed to be energy efficient so it doesn't cost to much to run. Last year my bill went up 35 bucks a month with that pool pump.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

actually we used the pool filter on a pool all summer long and it only made about a 10 - 15 dollah difference.

Awesome job on the tank Scott!. You're right about the pumps elec usage, mine only went up about 15$ a month last year. Un-heated garage too!  Just put 4 traps in about an hour ago. Maybe help fill yours up at the same time. Again, Nice tank!
Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

OHHH that changes some things right there   Get yourself a bunch of declorinator from wally world  on sale now!  and run it a few weeks with that in it!   goood soaking to that pump   pump made of PVC poly vinyl CHLORIDE the Chlorine Molecules may attach them self's  and kill all the bait

Nice looking tank.  What are you using for an O2 bubbler or aren't you pumping air?

just the act of the water bubbling out of the upper tube on his setup and it "waterfalling" will oxygenate it.  Thats how nature does it.   Nature doesn't have bubbling stones every 20 feet!   ;D

I was wondering if that would be enough.  I'm also assuming the filter will keep water moving enough to help against freeze up if kept in a garage, yes?

Yep...the filter will completlely turn the tank over 6+ times per hour and i do have just a little heat in my garage that keeps it around 45 in the winter   ;)  i can turn the 4" PVC so the holes face down to create more turbulence if i need more oxegyn
