walleyes on the mohawk
« on: Mar 05, 2008, 09:10 AM »
Has anyone been getting walldos on the mohawk yet in open water. Every year I hear about guys getting them below the locks around the utica herkimer area. Anyone on here do that and r they hitting yet.

the river is probably too high this week.Season ends next sat. If water level goes down and you can get out before close of season it can be hot.i would fish at night.  they usually start staging in spawning stretches like below locks and damns in febuary/ march. Otherwise wait till season opens . i guess. ;)

My son says the Mohawk is way too high.  Unlikely, given the rain that it will be fishable before season closes.   Same issue here, with the Susky.  Not going to happen.

Have fished my area a lot this winter. Dark green bucktail tipped with a fathead. 30 seconds or so in between jigs. Deadly in the deep holes.

I haven't been on those sections of the Mohawk (Utica-Herkimer) since late fall, before they opened/closed locks and gates for winter.

I should have gone out this last Monday, here on Susky.  I heard a number of people were out w/boats, and it was in the 50's.  I think my last open water day was the last week of December, maybe first week of Jan, and caught eyes.  Year before was out till mid-January.

As Kappy said, slow it down.

Used to fish the Mo years ago with a buddy from work......we fished it hard, mostly the falls around Utica.  Caught my first muskie there.  Had some good times.  But got a different job, stopped fishing....you know the story.  Seeing this thread I'm gettin the itch though!   ;D

You might find this interesting.  I am not sure if it ever made it to print.  When I tried contacting him a couple of years ago, his daughter responded that he had passed away from cancer. :(  It has lots of Mohawk Vally/River info.

We did the falls at Utica to Dyke rd.  Also have gone upstream at Frankfort.  Still planning to do Dyke Rd to Frankfort, sometime.

I have been fishing open water below the Mohawk all winter & will continue until Friday - 14th... Definitly slow jigging is the key, actually more like dragging the bottom... Nice slob perch seem to like it also. Good luck!

Took off Friday from work & fished with a friend of mine from 7AM - 4 PM... Caught 10 Walleye & 35 perch all over 12" for the freezer & released 14 Walleye & many perch that were under 10"... We were both fishing from our small boats in the canal...From noon until 2:30 it was non-stop action...  ;)

Well it's over for a while with the EYE fishin, but here a couple a friend of mine caught on 3/11.

The Mohawk can be a Walleye machine when conditions are right and I would say mostly due to the high C&R rate and the lack of fishing pressure for them during the summer and winter months.
