I had to leave the 'gills and craps' alone and get my perch fix. AngolaJones and I have been chasing the perch on lakes with jumbos, but not numbers the last week or so with little to show for it and we have ended up gill fishing after a billion holes of looking for the crazy critters. Well, Saturday we decided to hit a lake that we knew had the numbers and put a few on the ice. It took all day, but we ended up with a mess. We caught between 150-200 to get the mess we had. There are no giants with the biggest fish measuring at 11 3/4, but they will sure taste good. In the morning until 10am we caught them all on no.2 black/silver jigging rapalas. I use 2 holes and jig a rap in one and use a spike and a chartreuse moon glitter on the other. I usually use the rap to bring them in and catch most of them on the spike, but before 10 the only thing they wanted was the rap. I had a little trouble hooking some and should have had close to twice as many keepers. I don't know how I kept losing them on that treble. I tried tipping the rap with a spike and they would not touch it. They definitely wanted it without bait and moving. After 10 they would only hit bait and we had to do a lot of moving to keep up with them. All the fish came from 4-6 fow and we were sight fishing. Hopefully after the fronts come through this week we will start to see some of the bigger ones come up. God Bless!

Same here you have to hunt 4 them. I like to set up camp and wait 4 the lights to go off on the tip-ups. FISH-ON. Has 2 be a warm day 4 me to run and gun. Shouldn't be 2 much longer it is getting close to late ice.

Wow nice catch of perch. How did you know to fish in 4 fow? i am a very inexperienced ice fisherman, just trying to learn how to ice fish for my three boys, they really love the sport and I started to enjoy more and more. We are going out Sat. morning. Not sure where yet. Main thing I would like to learn if anyone could tell me is what conditions do you need for good perch fishing? and what dept should we start at? Good Luck too all.

We started out deeper but we always drill a bunch of holes and I mean a bunch. We average probably 10-15 before we start. Then we move once the bite slows of if we don't see it. Also, if sight fishing (which is a blast in a shanty), you can see which direction most of the fish come from. Head that way. We ended up shallow and kept going shallower. Good luck. The perch are definately starting to migrate to the flats.
