highland lake 2/21
« on: Feb 21, 2008, 05:51 PM »
ctfrishermanct and i meet up at 8am for a good day of ice fishing. Were we live there is no ice anywhere around so we made the trip to highland about 1.5 hr away, we set up with about 10 traps and drilled two holes inside the shanty. It was a slow day 3 yellows and 1 chain pickerel about 13". Was hopeing for some bass or trout, but better luck next time.

I only fished Highland once right off the boat Launch. We caught several pickerel and bass. Is there any place that is better for trout or can you catch them all around? I like the bass and perch too but have been getting the itch for trout this year. thanks

You are running out of time for the non-trophy trout lakes to pursuit trout. Unfortunately the weather and ice have to cooperate with your fishing. If you consult the DEP anglers guide for the lakes nearest you that will provide the better trout fishing for the 16" or bigger trout minimum required on March 1st. Good luck. Try the Second Bay at Highland Lake or fish with someone knowledgeable of Candlewood.

I would not ice fish any lake unless I knew it like the back of my hand without the CT DEP Guide To Lakes and Ponds and a fishfinder of any type whether it be a flasher type or LCD. I would consider fishing it with someone who has fished it before or that was his favorite home pond and they produced fish before..

You do not need the whole book on your person. Just photocopy your favorite lakes and keep them where you can get to them with ease. Print out a spare copy for your tackle box or ice sled box under the lid if you still have one. It saves a lot of walking and provides you with quality time so you can ice more fish and locate the productive areas. You can staple it under the wood cover so it does not blow away or place it in one of those 8 X 11 plastic see through envelopes.
Next year I will bu the latest version. Mine is almost twenty years old.
Good luck; tight lines and enjoy your next day out. Don't forget your safety equipment.

Exactly what I do. The actual book never leaves the house.

If you pick up a copy of The 2008 CT Anglers Guide available when you buy your 2008 license and turn to page 17 you will find that The Fisheries Guide to Lakes and Ponds of Connecticut is available at the DEP Store and it can be ordered . The DEP Store phone number is 860-424-3556. It has maps of 120 lakes and ponds including the CT River and coves. Buy the hardbook cover for $29.95 and it is worth every penny plus a classy addition to your personal library.
I believe Tom at Fall Mountain Sports in Torrington (860-496-1199) may have several if you need it for the weekend. Call ahead to avoid the trip to Hartford.
If you decide to make the Hartford pilgrimage check on the hours and make sure they have it in stock with the upcoming trout season around the corner .

Thanks for the info on the book. I have one coming in the mail next week. I fished a small pond in Ridgefield yesterday that had 8 inches of ice. I could not believe it. Most of the ponds around us have 2 inches at best or open water. Gonna try again Sunday as I am sure I will be plowing tomorrow. Good luck to all!

i am gonna agree with pdbruzassr, i have this book and it has become my fishing bible. i never leave home without it. i have learned highland like the back of my hand. i can and will put you on any kind of fish that's there. all except second bay. my time is spent in first bay because i caught some beauty"s there. trout, large mouth bass, pickerel, sunny"s,brown trout,. one of my favorite spots there is off to the left of the boat launch . in the little cove by the food joint. got a nine lb. largemouth there and a couple nice trout to. if you want trout though, i would recomend out in the left middle of first bay. the trout seem to hang in about 8 to 10 feet from the surface. that's one of my favorite places for hard water. they also got very large smallies in second bay. trust me buy the book you won"t regret it!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info Miket. Does anyone know if there is ice left on Highland? I would like to go up tomorrow but it's close to an hour away and if theres no ice that would be a bummer. Any reports would be appreciated. thanks

May I suggest thatyou call Tom at Fall Mountain Sports. He has the up to date info and talking to him this A.M. he said Mudge Pond had over 20: of ice. He can give you more up to date info on the lakes in the Northwest corner. The phone number is 860-496=1196. Blaine rules the upper CT River area and Tom is King of The Litchfield Hills.

I spoke to him this A.m. 1-860-496-1199. He may not open early 6A.M. this Sunday due to the deluge we are getting in the Litchfield Hills
Many members of this web site and participants in others attend his adult fisherman's day care center and discuss the hot spots and techniques which are successful He does not have a pot belly stove there but the Chinese restaurant next door will keep you warm.
Tom is closed Mondays and has his daily siesta from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 PM. Tom felt with the cold front coming in Sunday night that everything will refreeze. Temps are supposed to be in the teens again.
Good luck where you go and be careful.
You can call Trips Triple S'sm in Torrington. I do not have the number available.
