a-1 ice
« on: Feb 18, 2008, 05:15 PM »
My kids have the week off from school, and I wanted to take them out tomorrow. I was wondering how the ice is at a-1. I thought I read a thread about it being open water near the causeway, but could not find the thread again. My boy was supposed to come with me to the Camp Joslin Derby, but I figured it would have been too cold/long for him. Now I owe him a trip. I just called Barrys Bait and was told there was quite a bit of ice before the rain. I'd appreciate any info cause i'ts a long ride to check ice.

ice will still be plenty safe...its the edges to be concerned about..a plank and some duck boots may be necessary....

Do you know how far I need to plank it. I don't want to freak out the kids. Were you out there this weekend?

Was there on saturday and the ramp was good. If not walk down the dam and head out before you get to the cement structure. I went out there 2 weeks ago when the ramp was water.

HOpe you hit em on A-1 today! Was at chauncey this am and the flags were glued to the sticks, only saw a couple flags with a small pic....Had to make a pit stop on the way home and nailed a couple open water rainbows...Made the best of the day...

The kids had an awsome time. We didn't get on the ice untill 10:00, and we fished untill 2:30. I wanted to set up in the channel by the island (in the lee of the wind) but there was another group there. We set up just the other side of the causeway. The flags were pretty constant all day. We let the kids have all of the flags, (almost) I had to grab one that hit my new Warrior. We ended up with 20 fish, not one over 1.5lbs, but the kids thought they were all "big fish". between myself and my neighbor we had 17 traps set. I set  them all around 4' to  stay over the weed. I probably should have tried a couple deeper and kept up with the weeds. All in all a great day.

After fishing Tuesday with my twins, and having so much fun, my wife got jeolous. I ended up taking Friday off to bring the whole family (wife and twins). I thought we might do well with a front coming. It started to snow around 6:00 on the way to A-1. We started to fish around 8:00, and by 9:30 had 10 fish (fishing 14 traps) including my daughter's 4lb 13oz bass. I landed another bass around the same size at 10:30. We had a canopy up for the snow, a nice camp fire going, and hot dogs on the grill. Just before we started to pick up, around 2:00 I sent my son out for a flag, he started yelling, and walks back with another 4 1/2 to 5 lb bass. This was my best day ice fishing ever, and with my family to boot. We ended up with 25 fish for the day.

Way to get them out there !  That is what fishing is truly all about.

I'm sure your kids will remember that day for the rest of their lives.

Next time take me along and have the little ones teach me how to catch big ones like that.  Do they help pull the sled?   Then it would be the perfect family  LOL

I wish the kids did pull my sled, this was the first time this year I had to pull it through the snow, (heavier than I thought). The sled is usually up my a**, trying to pass me up. I would love to know if anyone fished there Sat or Sun, how they made out. I think next weekend could be the last for me (hope not). Probably hit A-1 again as it's the only pond I have fished in centeral Ma. I was able to fish Watsons, and Winnicunnet most of the early part of the year.

Damn Chilly Willy!

I was there on Friday with 2 of my friends....we saw your tent set up probably about 200 yards from us. We were there from 10-2 with 6 tip ups/medium shiners and caught ONE PICKERAL! And it was tiny!

Nice going though....I know the spot I'm fishing next time we head there haha.

Were you set up in the middle, between myself and the ramp? I ended up just setting my gear all around 5-6 feet down, then adjusting up and down depending on whether I was in the weeds or not. I didn't catch any more fish than my Tuesday trip, just happened to get 3 nice size fish. Tuesday everything was under 1 1/2 lbs. (but fun)
