How did you get that pig through the hole?  What did you catch it on?

Rig, as follows:

Knotless-knotted (hair rig with 50lb PP) size 6 Resistance RTH3 hook. Leader length a whopping 2+ feet....
Size 8 swivel, with a pear 4oz lead. Then 3' of 20lb flourocarbon. Another swivel. then the regular 50lb squid line from ice trap...
The plan is to keep the squid line (dacron) away from the bait as far as possible....

Bait was a tiger nut (from chufa plant root, boiled. High in sugars and bullhead don't like em) with a piece of fake, floating yellow corn. I tried sweetcorn but the d**ned bullheads were all over it.

So I switched over to more Euro gear and baits...

Still, hard to get em under the ice!

Hole was 2 x 10" holes next to each other, chipped out. Fish still touched both ends!

Wasn't really expecting one this size! Most of the fish in there are 8-17lbs....

Trick on any water for carp through the ice is finding them...they school up in tight schools, usually in much shallower water than most think. These were in 6-7' shelf with 12-17' on each side. Good wintering spot, but still tough to find them without sonar...
Carp...gotta love 'em!

If you are asking me, I did not have a scale. It was also released.
If I where to give a guess, I would say mid to upper twenties.

i cant beleive you guys are touchin those nasty things bare handed lol they look fun to catch but i've heard there a problem fish around here in indiana and ive had ones about twice that size or bigger swim up to the shore just a few feet away if your standing real still in the mornings but i can never get them to bite anything. what do you guys catch them on in the summer there is a pond and a river right around me with a hole lot of giant carp and i would'nt mind catching some, if you guys could give me some pointers i'd be greatful
i'll still fish when hell freezes

red worms
single kernal of corn
dough balls
jenson plastic eggs
look for where the carp are making a mud line, toss something small and weightless with small hook.

Fantastic fish, JAZII! I would guess yours to be upper 20's, as well. This one was shorter (just under 37"), but it's round girth made it heavy...
What state you catch that one in, Jaz??

A lot of tips and info on catching them open water can be found here: http://www.carpanglersgroup.com in thier free forum...but we're just learning how to land them through the ice!

If you can see the fish in open water, I would simply use freelined (no weight and a small #6 hook) bread, made into a doughy, but soft ball...and grind up some in your hand to chum.

i don't know alot about it, but euro gear is the way to go, i guess.
europeans are nuts about carp.
long  (16' or more) noodle rods, light  line, small hooks,
real finesse fishing.
i think some of the shanty sponsers market some of those rods
grandpa told me-"never wrestle with a pig. you both get muddy and the pig likes it".

Would love to know how old those bad boys are....nice fish!!!

Also to the guy who said he see's them swimming by shore and cant get them to hit...thats usually when they are spawning and thrashing around in the shallows. Also if you say they are twice the size of those fish i would bet they are grass carp...those bad boys can to 100lbs.

If you can't get'em to bite and you're outside city limits, maybe you'd want to take up bow fishing  ;)
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

  Thanks guys!

I know the only "carp" that get twice this size are grassers. I've had them to over 4' long, myself (open water, of course)...
If they are grassers, bread might be the only way to go...

Is it worth it to shoot them? I would imagine it would be much more fun to catch them on rod n reel...

Tried again today for 4 hours of nothing. Guess I paid the piper yesterday!

is it just the size that gets you? are you doing anything besides releasing them??
i never cared to catch such a fish
if im going to freeze im going after perch or walleye thats just Me.
the best part of having so many species is targeting certain ones and accually catching them

Try fighting one. It's a hell of a lot of fun.
