I have kept shiners for weeks at a time before venturing out to use them again and have wondered what I should feed them, if anything?

I just throw a couple of pieces of hard cat cat food in my tank.  As long as the cat doesn't find out everyone seems to be happy.

I have actually known of fish going months without eating (especially in the case of salt water fish) and fairing just fine. Usually when aquarium fish are transported from pet store to pet store, they aren't fed for weeks, so in my opinion, you should be fine for some time if kept in colder water.

I have tried to keep them in a fish tank and tried to feed them fish food but don't seem to eat it. I keep them in a bucket with a small bubbler and they will live a couple of weeks with no food. Start to turn a whitish color though. Just change water every couple of days.  Then use them as fish food :D

i keep mine in a 5 gal in the basement with a fishtank aerator. i found keeping them cold is key. another thread here mentioned that the cold water holds oxygen longer than warm. i do feed mine goldfish flakes, they eat it. Striper51's bait must on hunger strike :)

Maybe intead of keeping them for weeks at a time, you should throw them in a bucket and go fishing instead of sleeping in!!!

I agree.  Keep them cold and keep an airstone.  If you feed them, feed very little.

Feed them? I only feed them to the fish!!!
Change the water once or twice a week and I just feed them fish flakes every other day because it makes the water dirty.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

I never feed them food at all.  I have also found that keeping a couple suckers in the cooler helps too
