Does the Spud Scare Fish?
« on: Jan 31, 2008, 06:44 AM »
I have both an 8in Mora hand auger, and a spud, and was wondering which of the two makes more noise under the ice, therefore scaring more fish?

I have always thought that the spud would scare fish the least out of any other method. I think this because I think it sounds like the ice settling under the ice. just my 2 cents.

I don't believe it scares fish I have caught fish a couple of minutes after spudding a hole and has been primary method for hole cutting for 35yrs. I know which holes are mine the next day if it don't snow

I find it hard to believe that any fish would be scared of a potatoe! Unless of course you were to throw one at them ...

Tony Dean Outdoors put divers under the ice years ago to watch the reaction of the fish when using a spud bar, hand auger and power.  The spud bar bothered them most and the power auger bothered them the least. I think this test can be found on his website.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Seems to me the spud would be more annoying. Kinda like tapping on the side of a fishbowl, lots of thundering vibrations. Thankfully Fish have short memories, if it didn't directly affect them they soon forget about the noise.

The spud is the only thing me and my "crew" use to make holes, I've stuck lines in right after spudding and cleaning, and have had fish hit it as soon as it starts going down. But I've never used and auger so i can't really say whats better.
Kids who hunt, fish, and trap, don't mug little old ladies.
Good luck, and tight lines to all.

I'm sure a spud will startle a fish when it's used but I don't think it will drive them out of that area .
I've caught fish rite after someone chops a hole within 30 yards .

Me and my girlfriend were fishing honoeye lake sunday I put down the Aqua View camera down for her, Whenever someone drilled a hole by us, We'd see fish cruising through, spooked.

I think a spud bar would DEFFIENTLY spook fish!

what about a chainsaw??   some  guys use that to open up holes.   That's got to be pretty noisy as well?
