menhaden is a really oily ocean baitfish. For guys who like to fish dead bait on the bottom this stuff is great for soaking your bait in. scent really carries. Choice liquid for chum slicks for ocean fishing.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

I catch Menhaden or "pogies" as we call em all the time off of the lakes around New Orleans with a cast net.

Their oil is so potent that when a school is swimming in the water they create an oil slick on top that you can see from the boat.  Usually good fishing around schools of pogies for speckled trout, redfish, catfish and drum.  Makes sense that it would lure in any predatory fish up north too... oily buggers they are.

That being said, I would imagine that you would want to water it down as it carries quite far.

The oil is so thick that a table spoon will leave a 10' slick on top of the water!

Check with your local hardware store or feed store that sells lawn & garden
fertilizers as it is commonly used for fertilizer on garden plants.

If you can't find the pogie oil try cod liver oil found at the local drug store. And yes it does help to bring in pike.

I occasionally inject the cod liver oil into my dead bait as well, I have found that it helps a bit, but every bit counts right!

you can get it from your favorite fishing store thats online.  inject the oil as is.  we make chum "bombs" with sand or cat food with rocks to help them sink.  the oil will seep out slowly and make a slick.
