orange/yellow moon glitter tipped with waxie(s) or Fairy/Moxy jigs tipped with waxie(s)
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

Detroit,

May be easy for some, and maybe I complicate things a bit, but I would say there is no over-all favorite. Depends upon the Lake, sun, no sun, water clarity, depth fished, time of day etc...

My favorite would represent something color wise as the current food source of the AM, and in low light it could be bigger than later in the day. As the sun rises and micro-organisms migrate, my favorite would change to a neutral color, and be down-sized significantly, and as the day wore on, the bite wanned, my favorite would have a wedgee, Maki or other plastic added as scent/attraction etc...

Sorry I cannot just say Red, or maybe green etc.. 460 lakes in the County, and each has a specific need dependent upon many factors listed above.

Cloudy waters would get a glow or HOT colored jig as a base.

Silver or gold metal are best on some lakes dependent upon sun, or lack of.

Could go on forever.

Now, if I were allowed one jig to use the rest of my life.....it would be one from the Fiska Line-up prolly.

 :P

I like using super small jigs. I miss/lose a lot more fish than if I was fishing a bigger jig but I also get a ton more hits. A #14 or #16 Maramooska or Diamiond jig is my favorite. I usually have quite a few out with me on the ice so I can switch them out and find the right color. Sometimes I use waxworms but a spike is the perfect size for a #16 hook. When I fish this small I use 1 or 2lb test.

Mooska's and Diamond jig's #1 go to, all the time. Crappie and bluegill can't resist. Ive caught fish on them w/o any bait and seen it done plenty! Nuf said.

First I would have to decide if I were fishing for bluegills, perch, or crappies, For bluegills and Crappies I perfer to use ice flies, the ones with the tungsten colored bead, they seem to sink a little faster and with a fly,I think I catch bigger fish. My bead colors vary from flour. green to gold to silver to black & even yellow. My flies vary in color from olive green to purple, to black& brown, for crappies any colors ok as long as it,s red. I must tell you that all of these flies that I use is jigged very softly with a gotcha spring bobber, if the fish breathe on you,re fly, you will know it with a gotcha bobber. For perch I perfer to use any small hali,s tipped with a spike, mousie, or wax worm, and sometimes a minnow. Please remember you asked an open question, I,m sure other fisherman have their favorite types of lures to use but it,s all a matter of preference, and I would doubt that there are very many that will go to the type of in depth detail that I just have given you, but I like to see people have fun and catch fish, it truly does make for a better world when people are happy and having fun.  I hope this helps and maybe you can give someone else some good information sometime .

For Bluegill in clear water (the normal water I fish) I have 5 rods rigged for a start.
1. Orange/ Chartreause Demon jig #10
2. Chartreuse/Red Hali Jig #12
3. Chartreuse/Red/Green Hali jig #12
4. Black/Red Fleck Moon Glitter #12
5. Chartreuse/Orange Moon Glitter #10
If these don't work I'll throw the box at 'em

For Perch clear water.
I'll usually use an attractor 4 - 8" above my jig (Slipdropper or a med size Pimple or Castmaster w/hooks removed) the jig is usually a white #10 rocker or a red #10 Fairy/Moxy jig.

bacon?

can they even eat a whole piece? j/k

I'm assuming that you just cut little pieces of meat off, or do you use the fat? I'm intrigued, sounds like a good tip.

I agree with RL,It would be easy if you had 1 lure that worked all the time but conditions change, sun, clouds, water clarity, noon phase, wind direction, fronts, theres alot take goes into it.I do like Ratso's but today,no takers tried alot of stuff but todays choice was a glow demon w pink head,I've caught fish on this jig before but not my favorite jig by far,I not bragging but I have hundereds of ice jigs, some will work better than others BUT all jigs will have there day,If you have the weapons you will win the battles, when you find one that works all the time let me know, till then I'll keep buying more jigs than I'll ever need.
