The confusion is over the name "bullhead", which is what a lot people call sculpin.  Big flat head, big pectoral fins, lives on the bottom of lakes and streams.

True bullhead are catfish (ie brown bullhead) and are illegal as bait because they are a gamefish.

Some guy sold small brown bullheads to Falers in Pinedale a few years back, they had to take them off the shelves.  If they have whiskers they are illegal!

if i use meat its on the pups, it screws up the presentation of my swim baits and it even screws up a tube jig if i ever do use meat on the big boys i will only use a strip about2''long 1/4 wide then i will hook it on then put my tube over it  with the meat stickin out the tail ,try it it works then that junk aint stickin out screwin up the presintation how about a slite lift rather than a jiggle trust me i catch hundreds of big lakers a yr icein and boatin and never JIGGLE IT OR JIGIT iam tryin to be a dead or diein fish not a spastick jerkin minnow

5" to 6" is a big one, they probably average 3" to 4"

No you dont see them very often, they live on the bottom & under rocks, Kind of a solitary critter.

Caught a sculpin once in a high mountani streem once fishin for cutthroat. Was snagged under a rock for about 20 seconds. Gave it a hard jerk and out came my lure with that freaky lookin' fish on it. Probably about 4" long. I was like what the hell is this. Brought it back to my dad and he had to tell me. I'd never even seen one before and all of the sudden I pull one out of a swift moving mountain stream....it was weird.

There are no bullheads meaning the ones with whiskers, the brown bullheads, but there are a kazillion cat fish, some well over 20 pounders. Night fishing up river with stink bait works in summer. My neighbor a number of years ago had 5 in a 48 quart cooler and the lid would no shut on them. they were like pigs without legs.  They like the current a lot, probably well above firehole I would suspect.  I would like to get a few through the ice but they are probably pretty sluggish I would guess. The recent Boysen posts of  the big ones flamed my emotions to go find them down here in the gorge.
Anyone have any further thoughts on the gorge wintercats?

 ; ;Daint goin to fire any one up here.no i have been lucky to grow up on the gorge and fish it as hard as i have.i fish for lakers only 9months out of the yr the other 3 i try to do some huntin my best laker to date is a 47lb toad that was caught in the spring after ice out caught 8 that day over 20lbs.ash

 hit swim yesterday and got 3 over 20lbs before 9am then it slowed way down till  around 2pm then my buddy got 4 teenagers and i stuck one more around 25lbs slow weekend we caught 4 today but nothing over 20lbs.ash

its good but the utah navy was on it its about 6''-7''+guess it wasnt as bad as anvil which had over 40 trucks parked on the point sat swim only had about 30 but i was on the ice at 5am to beat the navy no one even came out till around 6am have never saw so many people after lakers as i have this yr makein it tuff to get on any good spots unless you camp out on them

That sucks about the crowds . That is one of the reason I go to the Gorge is it not that crowded like other waters but all this snow on the lakes is making it rough to fish waters closer to home .
