I use book matches. I first make a loop where I want my line marked. Then I reach through the loop and grab the two hanging ends of line and pull them through the loop far enough to slide a match in and pull it tight. They easily come out, and the match can be reused. If you can't picture what I'm talking about, let me know and I'll post a picture.

use a botton, slide it up the line as you go.
or learn to tye a slipknot correctly, have someone show you how.
or make a u in your line and poke it threw a swivel loop and around the end

Lots of good ways to mark your line. Next time you're in LL Beans or Kitttery Trading Post, pick up 5 of the smallest bobbers they sell. They're get for marking ice fishing lines and they slide up and down easily when you change holes or depths.

I go tip up bobbers or just use my flasher to set my depth (I don't tip up fish much), sometimes pick up a fish on the drop using a flasher.
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

my great grandfather & father both used buttons.....so in my world, this is the only right answer!  ;D

i also hook a rubber band on the trip-hook of my trap.....at the end of the day, when i reel up, the hook gets hooked under the rubber band.....with tension, it keeps everything neat and tangle free without having to hook back into the line or under a wingnut

Dad's Tackle Box has small corks that you fit on your line and slide them up and down as needed.  Plus, they provide a nice place for your hook instead of sticking through the line on the spool.

hoo doo

by trip hook (i didn't quite know what to call it!), i mean the hook that you hook the flag to when you set the trap

a smallish rubber band hooked on there works well; just gotta slide it out of the way when you set the flag; in the 30+ years we've used this method, i only had one flag catch the band and not trip (since that 21" salmon was on so long, i had to keep him for baking  ;D)

Use a very small split shot. I've been using them as long as I can remember.
