Nothing special going on up here in Chicagoland, so I am not the only one who didn't do well today.  Ice was a good 6-8 inches all over the place but VERY slick.

I caught about 60 fish, problem is they were all dinks except 7 fish.  They little things were following me to every area and hole I was fishing.

I think that is the same one I caught last week on a little lake in Lake Station, only I also got to meet his little brothers

I not only met the little brother but the whole extended family.  Of the ~60 fish, 7 were keepers, the rest dinks, and probably 25 of the dinks were this size.

I had to stop and think for a minute to see if I was at the right lake or if I made a mistake and went southeast instead and ended up at one of those NW Indiana lakes.

I saw a couple guys on the south end of Garver lake yesterday, so I thought I would give it a try this morning.  Drilled my first hole in 20 fow and caught a keeper gill right away.  That was the last fish I caught.  It sure seems like the bite is slow everywhere right now.

It was fast and furious, but I don't know if I had the proper setup or not, but I could only hook about 1 out of every 15 bites..  This was the first time I have ever tried this.

Nice Smelt and nice set up Jack!! You realize that is about the same amount of meat as 2 good Crappie, don't you?!!?  :roflmao: I read that a lot of guys use Halis up there for Smelt. I wonder how those Diachi bait catchers would work? The small harnesses with around 8 tiny dressed hooks on them.

8 droppers on a line is probably illegal... but I bet they would work if the hooks are small enough. I think the limit is 2 in michigan....2 rods, two hooks each....

That antifreeze jug that you see is more than 15 years old. No antifreeze in it.  It is used for storage inside the bucket.

Or maybe 3 Lafferty lake bluegills.... ;D
I never heard of those Diachi bait catchers.  I will have to do some research on this.

I was told that if it is a designated smelt lake, you can use more than that.  I don't know if there is a limit on number of hooks but I know people are using as many as 7.

I use the diachi's (actually called sabiki rigs) in MI. You're allowed a max of 4 hooks total per person and a max of 2 rods. I clip all but 3 off to be legal so I can jig a second rod with only 1 hook as well.

Beginning April 1st, you will be allowed 6 hooks total per person and a max of 3 rods. I'll probably clip only one of the 6 hooks off and have a jig on my second rod since I don't multitask that well.

IN is 2 hooks max per rod. and a 3 rod maximum. I use crappie rigs instead of sabikis in IN or else I'd have to clip off 4 of the hooks to stay legal.

That's it, Sabiki's. We use them to catch live bait in the Gulf. VERY sharp little hooks and very effective. I thought they might work for the Smelt. Thanks!! Here is a link you can copy and paste...

Bryan,........I can't tell by looking, but are the hooks all in a line, or are they all at the bottom of the rig?
