Safe Ice?
« on: Nov 30, 2007, 08:09 AM »
After looking at the extended forecast, the weather is beginning to look promising.

What is your prediction of when we'll get safe ice? I predict January 1.

All my ponds are frozen over with a "snow ice." Ponds froze up with the 3 1/2 inch snow fall we had the other night. Kind of a weird opaque looking ice. We are expecting a few more inches of snow tonight. I just hope I can get on the ice to keep some of the snow off or I may be looking at dissolved oxygen problems later in the winter. Smaller shallower ponds are more prone to winterkill if you get too much snow on them. You're O.K. if you can get on the ice and with the snowblower but if you have deep snow but thin ice you're screwed.

Not sure what the thickness is but I'd say could be 2 inches after last night.

i think we will be able to fish some channels and lakes that are in bowls before christmas. Tonights snowfall will tell all.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

We have only 1/2"-3/4" here in Fort Wayne.

I checked a pond behind my work at lunch & decided
that I'd wait a few days.

I'd venture out on 2" of good ice, but I like to wait till
the edges are pretty solid.

Checked it a little while ago. One inch if I'm lucky. Definitely not safe yet.

Tough call, do I want ice to fish on or do I want open water to duck/goose hunt on? Love to do both. Unfortunately here in Central Indiana I see that temps are to rise and lots of liquid snow is to fall this weekend. >:(

Actually saw a guy sitting on a bucket today on a little pond in Lake Co. (old Broadmor C.C.)  I would'nt get my fat rear out there, but I was encouraged to see someone on the ice.
