Where would you suggest ?
« on: Nov 26, 2007, 04:18 PM »
Hello fellow Americans.
As an Iowan I was thinking of trying some early ice in the great state of Minnesota. I'm thinking of Winny , Mille Lacs, Leech , Red , or ??
If you were going for a long weekend on first ice ....where would you go ?

If you are willing to go to Red, go the extra 1/2 hour and hit Lake of the Woods

Mille Lacs is one of the last to have safe ice. It is huge and the wind can keep it open a long time. :( The bays can have a foot of ice on them before the main lake is even closed up all the way. Fishing the bays can be absolute dynamite though, especially on the south and east side of the lake. If you are looking for worry free ice, keep going, Mille Lacs is the wrong choice. Most years, LOW has the first and last good ice of the big lakes.

Good Luck

Red's bite has been great for eyes and decent for the huge craps, but you can only keep 2 eyes.  LOTW is always good.  I'd hit both of them, you'll drive right by red on the way to LOTW

Always wear clean underwear, cuz ya never know when the paramedics are gonna have to cut your pants off.

The BIG crappie thing on Red has been going on for a few years now. I figured it would be about over by now. Never fished this lake  , drove by many times .  Thanks for the on going info !!

It kind of fizzled once they got the walleye population back up.
