studded 4 wheeler tires
« on: Nov 20, 2007, 10:32 AM »
Just wondering how some of you stud your tires for ice .
I have been contemplating having mine done or just doing it myself if there is a way to do it without risking the tire integrity .
Any suggestions appreciated .

If it were me I'd just go with chaims. There farely cheap and you wont limit your tires to just ice and snow use.. ;)

Hi new to this forum
I use sheet metal screws because if they come out they won't rip you or your fenders up!
Have fun life is short!!!!!!!!

Depending on the size and depth of tire lug you can run short sheet metal screws and not damage a tire and pull them out after winter, I know of people who do that. You could also have a dedicated set with long studs or screws running all the way through tire and cemented in place, I know of people who do that too. You can run chains too. Chains will not only help you on ice but they will help in deep snow especially the wet heavy stuff.

tigger when I first bought my guad I got a pair of chains for the rears. the problem is on just ice the ride is awful it will rattle your fillings loose and you have poor steering control with the front tires. I went to the ATV dealer and ordered 1/2 inch ice studs there made of carbide I just screw them in my center lug on fronts and rears take them out in the spring. The first time I did it the wife came out and said what the hell are you doing!!!  There about 20$ for 250  o ya the chains are back in the case used once  ART

Thanks , That sounds like the way to go .
I'll have to go to the local dealer and grab some so I can get it done before ice .
I'm bad at procrastinating so I better start now .lol

Sounds like a good idea art53. I use my 4-wheeler all the time winter and summer. Do you just take yours out on the ice. Was curious as to how your studs hold up on the gravel. I do agree that the chains rattle you silly. but if you put them on the front tires they grab pretty well.

Rodrunner   polaris doesn't recomend chains on the front just the rear. You can't tell there in gravel take them out in spring can last 3 years+ ART

If its 4 wheel drive they shouldn't be needed!  If they are,  I would definitely go with chains! They can be taken off and on relatively easy.

Only time I have felt the need for studs is on first ice when there is NO traction. Otherwise a quality set of tires will be better than any set of chains in the deep stuff and are not hard on the machine like chains can be. They also dont limit your speed either.
