Catching Alewife??
« on: Mar 22, 2007, 07:05 PM »
New to the Finger Lakes, NY region and it seems that the Alefwife is a great bait to use for trout (I LOVE THEM). Any advice on how to catch them, or (easier) bait shops around Canandaigua/Rochester that sell them.  Thanks!!!

Here in CT we jig for them during open water  season at night. We use submersible green lights to draw them in and than jig for them with small sabiki rigs with a Hali glow jig on the bottom.

You can also cast sabiki rigs into schools of alewife dimpling the surface and catch them that way .

Toughest part is locating the schools of alewifes.

Rice chum also helps draw them in to the lights.
