I got a Jiffy Stealth last summer and used it all of last winter and had no problems with it other then I drilled a little too shallow and wrecked the blade. LOL
. Other than that it started up nicely and cuts fast enough ( I don't see the argument some guys have between 3 seconds and 5 seconds, so I pay no attention on how fast the thing cut. ) I got replacement blades for this year so everything is set to go. It's a lillte on the heavy side but that doesn't matter, I got a sled to pull it with. I haven't had mine very long, but from what I have heard they are very durable and last a looooong time. So, Jiffy is my vote. - Fishinut

Diehard Jiffy lover. Heavy but durable (which is what matters when you're in the middle of the lake and freezing your tits off with no plan B).-V

Last year I went to DICK'S to get an auger because I had had enough of hand drilling 2+ foot of ice...I was looking for a Jiffy, but all they had left was one STRIKEMASTER XL-3000 10 incher, which I bought...I have no complaints with it as of yet...knock on wood. That thing kick' butt!!

I have had a Tanaka 8" for 15 years. It is the predecessor to the Nils. I burn premium gas mixed with Opti2 oil at 100:1 and have not had any problems with it. Drain the fuel in spring, run the engine dry, pull the plug and give a squirt of oil, turn the engine over a few times, reinstall the plug and put it away for the summer in the shed. It usually flashes up on the second or third pull the next fall.

Around my area, we dont get a lot of thick stuff. Maybe 8" in an average year. Last year was the exception 17". All i need is my lazer, 6" hand auger and i'm good to go. If we got ice any thicker, on a consistent basis, i'd get a power auger, but for now, to me, it would be overkill. but thats just for me... no offense to you guys.

Ice here is only 6" now so I'm using the hand Lazer, a few more inches and I'll break out the Jiffy. the Jiffy is about 15 years old and kicks a$$, but I will probably upgrade to a Nils next year, only because of weight. I am on foot a lot and the Jiffy weights a ton.

I've been using a 7" lazer hand auger for 10yrs and love it. Sizable for normal fishing but not so much work as an 8". Cuts awsome if blades are taken care of. In fact I measure ice thickness with it. 1/2 inch/revolution. Tough day though if ice gets over 10"

Broke out my XL-3000 today for the first time since last March and it fired on the 2nd pull and I ran it at idle for 10 minutes...the thing still kick's butt.

Love my Lazer. If the ice gets to be more than 12 to 16 inches this year, I'm deffinately getting a power Strikemaster. Cutting through 3 feet of ice with an 8" is for the birds.
Just curious if anyone knows if Strikemaster makes a 7 or 8" power auger in thier new line.

my jiffy 8" is the best. gets a workout later in the year when we get 3 or more feet of ice. i dont think it will ever wear out. i always wipe and oil the blades after each use and they are still razor sharp 8)

I'll go with nad42's preference. The strikemaster xl3000 is the cat's _ss. Helps having 3hp sometimes. But, when you think about it, when you're on ice as thick as we fish, any power auger is better than all that elbow grease we used to use with the hand augers. Plus you don't get funny looks from all the northerners when you break out the hand auger when the ice is 2 feet thick.............

Whitey...you mention hand augers, I remember as a kid using an ice bar to cut holes thru 2 foot of ice...what was I thinkin?!!!...But anyways, it was good to see someone not put down the other brands...if it runs right, and cuts ice, who cares who makes the thing...certainly not me.

I have a Jiffy Model 30 that I have had for quite a few years. As I get older the weight of it was starting to be a serious drag (literally). I just bought a new StrikeMaster Lazer Mag Express (8 inch) and must say I am quite impressed by the lightness and it's cutting ability. We only have between 6 and 8 inches of ice right now so I guess I'll have to wait and see how it does with the normal 3-4 feet of ice.
