Burbot and Whitefish
« on: Mar 01, 2007, 09:27 PM »
Here is my first attempt at underwater filming. Enjoy.

In the first video you will see two burbot.  One is hard to see in the murky distance. The burbot closest was moving towards my set line out of frame and was hooked a few minuets later. :)

In the second video, a whitefish moves in and eats a small tidbit off the bottom of the lake and moves on.

In the third video a burbot checks out my lure and then moves on.
It hits the camera on the way by. :woot:

Do you have your camera on a 45 degree plane or is it on the flat setting? How far is the camera from your hook?

Scuba I had the camera facing straight out, looking straight on.
The camera was 3 feet from the lure.

Fishermanjake they were a bit finicky that day but I did land 2. I think they were just wandering through that area in route to the spawning grounds.
That was indeed a big white fish, I was hoping it would bite but no go. ::)

Does tidbit = chum, :-).  Baby shrimp work good I hear, but I wouldn't know.

It may have been I am not sure.
I was fishing a pre-drilled hole and I noticed the white things on the camera.

Ya, I've never seen one jigged before either....  Do tell WW does it work for you?

That particular Rapala in the video was a super shad rap, he was a bit too boyant to fish properly. It attracted some burbot, pike and whitefish that day but no hits. :P

I do use other crankbaits through the ice with some success. The key is they have to be just a little under neutral buoyancy or sinking models. If they have rattles in them so much the better. :)

Thanks guys. :)

Yeah, I think the burbot are pretty cool, they always seem to do something neat in-front of the camera.

One time I saw a burbot rush up to my lure, open it's mouth, flair it's gills and shake it's head quite fast and then swim off. Not sure what
that was all about, but I wish I would have caught that behavior on camera. :-\

Thanks for the tip. :)
I was experimenting with alternate lures that day and I have not used it since.

A jig and minnow or smelt has been my go to lure for burbot, plus a few others. ;)
