Mousies were early and tended to be solid all winter for years, but they're history for this season. Decent sized fish have been fickle for me so far, really small jigs (#14-#18) and a single, smallest, white spike on at most 2# line rather deep (15'+) has caught enough to make it worthwhile on 8"+ 'gills and Perch, color hasn't mattered. Haven't heard any reliable reports of anyone pulling up solid, good sized limits locally.

Wax worms are all I've used, and I'd say that I've done fairly well.  I usually get in the 20's for # of gills per day, but that's only real good sized ones.  None of the tweeners.  I like spikes because you can catch about 50 fish on one, but sometimes I think they're too small for the bigger fish.
Some fishermen sit at home during the winter dreaming about fishing.  The real ones go out and do it.

I use waxxies, spikes, or mousies for gills, And use Minnows for Perch, Crappie, Pike, Walleye, Bass, Bullheads, and anything else that'll eat a minnow.

I have never used corn bores, but heard that they work very well if you can get them.

What do you do with them when you're not fishing?  I have some that are still alive and have been in the fridge for 2.5 weeks.

I keep my waxxies at room temp but you have to get them from the bait store when they are alive. Just because they are white, doesn't mean they are living. They should be crawling around like maggots in the wood chips. Alot of stores keep their waxxies too cold and they die.

Just keep them in the fridge, and if you can, put them in some fresh pine shavings from planer or table saw and they will last a long time.  Also I find dead ones work fine as long as they are not turning black or too soft.  Hey spartaman12, what lakes do you fish around sparta?

When I was at the basin at Metro two weeks ago we COULD NOT get the fish to bite on minnows or wax worms.  We got bored and picked up LEAF WORMS from the store and actually caught a few of them...just because they would cover the teardrop better vs. the other baits.  With the other baits the fish would nip at the bait but never where the hook was at.  Once we had worms and they nipped at it you could hook them easier.  Prolly a one time thing though.  Cuz when those perch are hittin' at LSC it doesn't matter WHAT you have on.  When they ARE hitting I've had the best luck with artificial bait just because your hook is in the water more vs. live bait

Maybe that's your problem??  There could be chemicals left over that kill the bait.  I put mine in old film containers.  I don't know where you can find them anymore, but it's really convenient.

wigglers have been working great for me, i always have waxies and spikes with me too, but they are nailing the wigglers so that's all i end up using.  shiners for pike.

Depends on the lake.  Ill hang a small shiner low for a walleye under the tip up.  For big..i mean big pike...Get yourself some sucker decoys for spearing...hang one of them bad boys down in a weed channel and give it a little time.

To do that...just hang a downrigger release even with your reel on the tipup....big pike will never care about the resistance and you wont chase constant minnow trips.

I have but find they tend to tear off easy.  you end up rebaiting quite a bit vs spikes.

When I go out I try to have wax worms ,spikes, always wigglers, and minnows if going after perch. When I use minnows or wiglers I use small jigs with a long shank hook don't really lose that many wigglers that way.  I do use a camera while perch fishing.

The small perch is where you might lose more wigglers. Hardly lose any to bigger perch and sometimes catch two or more on one.
