Football jigs for deep water perch fishing
« on: Feb 07, 2007, 06:27 PM »
Just curious if  anyone has tried 1/4oz or 1/8oz footballs jigs for deep water perch from 20 to 40 feet? I have seen them at Marion Manor and Chapmans Sport Shop and wanted to give them a try. Any suggestions to where to try them would be appreciated. I will be fishing Sodus Bay, Black Lake, and Canadarago this year.

I've used football jigs very successfully on Oneida Lake in the past. They get down pretty fast in the deeper water. If your going to Canadarago, give the Northland Forage Fry a try. All the perch I've gotten there had baby bluegills in there stomachs. I've also used the footballs on Sodus. They'll bite them well tipped with a perch eye. Glow or chartreuse seem to be the best colors.

I have been hunting or fishing almost everyday of my life. The rest have been wasted.

Do you use a plain football jig or a dressed football with silver chenille and hackle?

I've always used dressed football jigs. Sometimes you can find the ones that are like 2 times longer than the ones they have at Marion Manor. They're plain and work really good as well in 30 fow or more. Again, glow or chartreuse seem to be the good colors. Another jig I have had a lot of luck with is a jig-a-whopper. They work on just about any lake for perch. Glow/blue works real well on Oneida. Chartreuse or glow on most other waters.

I have been hunting or fishing almost everyday of my life. The rest have been wasted.

They really shine on a hot bite when you just have to get it down fast. And the single hook is faster to undo than trebles. Tipped with minnow too.

Used a brown med. sized football jig tipped with a wax worm in 25fow off 3rd creek Sodus. Cought over 60 perch.  10< 8". Even caught some with no bait on hook.

When fishing deep for perch, try out a falling rig. It's a 1/4oz weight on bottom w/ a hook tied in up 1' and change out from minnow, red worms and spikes. Bang the muddy bottom. This is deadly in mid-winter!

Crayfish Bob has them just east of the gas station in Costantia.
