Ice fishing newbie
« on: Feb 05, 2007, 07:59 PM »
Hey guys, just got into this ice fishing stuff and did a search on the internet to find this great site.  I've read some and need help on what to start out with, the best combinations (lure/bait) for perch, eyes, and gills.  Thanks, I do fish in the summer, but this seems to work a little differently.  What equipment will I need(absolutely, not shanty or 4 wheeler or anything)Thanks everyone

First buy should be a good auger a couple med action ice rods your jigs from summer and a portable flasher if you want to spend the coin. Bring positive attitude appreciation of outdoors and a sense of humor because stuff is going to happen to you on the ice. Welcome to Ice Shanty Buck and ask questions

If possible, find a bait shop that sells Hali jigs. The perch colored ones work very well.

Go down to equipment section and read away. Every opinion known to man is someplace on those pages.

Your best bet is to go along with someone who already ice fishes.

Most of the big box stores (Kmart, Walmart, etc) have beginner packages that are inexpensive and have most of what you'll need to get started chasing bluegill and perch.

The most important equipment for a successful trip ice fishing is a good pair of boots.  If your feet get cold, you won't have any fun at all.

Rat Man and Jayswimmer are correct for several reasons
If you go with someone like me, all you need is warm clothes and boots.
I have enough rods and tackle for both of us.  Plus all the more expensive items like power auger and a vex.
You get a chance to use this stuff and see what you like before you lay out the $$
Also you learn a lot about how to use all this stuff
Most importantly you learn about ICE SAFETY from Some One ELSES experience.

So let us know where you're from, there's probably someone here who'd be willing to take you under their wing.

There's nothing better that you can do than to go with someone who has experience and learn from them. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to teach you for some gas money or a few cold ones. ;)

Welcome to Iceshanty by the way!
